Patrick Ames – Young and Amorous/I Was Thinking EP Review: A Charming Duo

At 69, Patrick Ames proves that the heart is where the music lies. In his latest release, “Young Amorous/I Was Thinking,” Ames delivers an EP that’s bursting with personality. Each track has a unique charm that brings a groovy energy to spice things up. This undeniable energy is immediately felt on the first track.

“Young and Amorous” is first on the EP. It pulls the listener in with a groovy drum beat that’s flanked by spacey synths and a psychedelic guitar riff. When the bass hits, the vocals of Patrick Ames come with them. His smooth and groovy vocals are the perfect compliment to the music, which will want to make you get up and dance. The catchy chorus helps with its intoxicating dance vibe that makes it easy to sing along while you move to the music. You can feel the groove take over as the bass takes the reins around the 1:30 mark. The slow, sensual bass groove is propped up by the poppin’ drums that keep the aesthetic grounded. “Young and Amorous” is all about having a good time, which will stick in your head with its addictive bassline and disco inspired sounds.

“I Was Thinking” brings things down a notch with its acoustic guitar. The smooth plucks flow through the track like water while Ames’ vocals take center stage. Their power is on full display within the first minute as he cries “Every inch upon this earth has been crying out the alarm.” The percussion hits the track around the 1:30 mark with some maracas while a bass comes in to give sound some depth. When the instrumental profile expands, the sound becomes a hypnotic groove that’s easy to start moving to. This does nothing to take away from the vocal power of Patrick Ames in this contemplative track, which can be felt in the outro’s refrain of “I was thinkin’, I was thinkin’,” which blends in perfectly when the track kicks its groove into high gear. It makes “I Was Thinking” the stand-out track on the album with a dynamic sound and a magnetic charm.

Patrick Ames’ new EP is both expressive and enjoyable. Both tracks have memorable lyrics and groovy beats that suck the listener in. The first one wears its charm and high energy on its sleeve, while the next casts an air of mysterious contemplation before upping the tempo in a dynamic way. While the aesthetic of both tracks may not be for everyone, “Young and Amorous/I Was Thinking” is an EP that shows off the musicianship of Patrick Ames with two unique tracks that deserve a listen.
