Being a teenager sucked for many people. This is a time when things change drastically and everyone expects you to start acting like an adult and things stop making sense, causing angst. S.E. Case writes about all this in a webcomic turned graphic named called “Rigsby, WI.”
In the small town of Rigsby, WI, a group of friends are planning for their school’s homecoming. During this time, all of them are going through something serious. From an abusive mother, poverty, racism and obesity.
It’s hard to describe the plot of this graphic novel since it’s a slice-of-life story. Everything these characters experience are normal things normal teens experience on a day-to-day basis. There aren’t any earth-shattering crises, murders or anything like that, meaning most readers will be turned off by how mundane this comic is. Teenagers may find a lot more to like than adults since they’re currently experiencing the same things as these characters. Most adults will see themselves as a teenager in these characters which will bring back awful memories.
The strongest point of the comic is the art. Case made it a point to make these characters look like real teenagers that anyone will see in real life. This greatly helps the comic since readers will be able to take the story seriously. The colors look faded and don’t pop out at the reader. This seems deliberate given how serious and mundane most of the things happen in the comic.
“Rigsby, WI” has a story that will resonate with teenagers and some adults who used to be like the characters. Some may not like or even be bored with the slice-of-life story but it’s not terrible. Add in art that has characters who look like real teenagers and you get something that will satisfy a certain type of reader even if what happens mundane things teenagers go through daily.
