K4LT ‘This Room’ (Reprise) Review: A Masterclass

With its mix of dark lyrics, 80s indie dark wave vibes, and a reference to Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the Vintage German band creates a surrealistic world that deeply resonates with a sense of isolation and introspection in its new single, ‘This Room.’

The electronica dark wave artist K4LT, which means ‘Cold,’ returns after his last single, ‘LCP.’ Hailing from Berlin, K4LT’s music is a fascinating fusion of influences, spanning from the Scottish rock band ‘Mogwai,’ known for their dark lyrics, to the Indie band ‘Nada Surf.’

When you close your eyes and listen to this song, you feel like the loneliest person in the world in a deserted neighborhood surrounded by large buildings. That’s unsurprising due to the artist’s origin: Berlin, where the sun doesn’t come out in the winter and looks dark all year except in summer. Berlin is an excellent place to get inspired by the grey streets.

The song transmits a dark feeling and uses dark colors as well. It’s like a pallet of cold colors, such as charcoal, purple tones and blue greens. The cover album also has a concept that leaves room to think about the context; it is difficult to say if he makes a reference to Star Wars because of the lightsabers.

The single ‘This Room’ is a masterclass in musical composition. The use of the Suzuki Omnichord creates a unique sound, evoking the dark, electronic vibes of the 80s, reminiscent of David Bowie’s melodies. This, combined with the dark wave tones, paints a vivid sonic picture that is both nostalgic and contemporary, inviting the listener to immerse themselves in its atmospheric world.

The lyrics of ‘This Room’ make reference to the song ‘Swim and Sleep’ by the New Zeeland Band, ‘Unknown Mortal Orchestra’ one of K4LT’s inspirations. The lines, ‘Tidal Forces and a frown,’ ‘Oh fatigue, common noun’ and ‘Inside our minds,’ mirror a profound emotional battle, a mental lockdown that many can deeply empathize with. The techno aspect of the song adds a layer of complexity, making it a truly engaging experience.

In fact, the single reflects a dark theme, as seen in ‘LCP,’ released one year ago and ‘Boarding Pass,’ which also represents the concept of loneliness in his video. Now, the artist expresses the feeling of being stuck in a room and not enjoying the most incredible things outside of the screen of his phone.

Combining all these elements, the tech rhythm, dark lyrics, and loneliness make ‘This Room’ a perfect song for those who enjoy other artists or bands such as Mr. Kitty, Pastel Ghost, and Twin Tribes.

The surrealist cover, the rhythm and the dark feeling are the most highlighted attributes of the single by K4LT, who reaffirms being an artist seeking to step out in the past punk and dark wave genres.
