Review Fix Exclusive: Royal She Talks ‘Karma’ And More

Review Fix chats with vocalist Alison Freed and multi-instrumentalist Alexandria Reyes of Royal She, who discuss their new single, “Karma.”

About Royal She:

Los Angeles-based duo Royal She, comprised of vocalist Alison Freed and multi-instrumentalist Alexandria Reyes, blends an eclectic mix of rock, pop, hip-hop, and electronic influences on their newest single “Karma.” With a sound reminiscent of PVRIS and Paramore, their vibrant energy and sharp lyricism have quickly garnered attention since the 2019 release of their cover of Billie Eilish’s “My Girl,” produced by South African producer and hit-maker, Esjay Jones. Known for their catchy hooks and dynamic productions, Royal She is poised to make a significant mark on the music scene as they prepare to release their debut album “Befores and Afters,” in early 2025 hot off the success of the projects first singles,  “Worth It” and “My Ex.”

Their new single, “Karma,” is a feel-good rock anthem that delivers a playful yet piercing take on retribution. Crafted for those who’ve been wronged, this addictive track captures the essence of karmic vengeance wrapped in a trilling beat, soaring guitars, and powerhouse vocals. Its catchy melody and satisfying hooks make it the perfect soundtrack for reclaiming your power, whether you’re blasting it after a breakup or just enjoying the ride of life’s ups and downs. “Karma” is not just a song; it’s a vibrant celebration of karmic justice that leaves listeners humming its infectious refrain long after the last note fades. Check out Royal She’s newest single “Karma” on November 15th, 2024.

Review Fix: Your sound is intense and multifaceted. It’s nearly impossible to pin down. How would you

describe your music genre?

Alison: I kinda love hearing that. We both have a deep love of music and so many different genres have impacted us. From metal, to hard rock, to pop, R&B, Hip Hop, electronic, and rap. It’s been really fun blending elements from all the music we love. We were put into a genre-bending playlist for our last single, and I think that’s pretty fitting.

Alex: Intense is right! We tend to marry different genres & our personalities come across in our music. It’s

cut-throat, emotional, intense yet peppy. Our love for 90’s rock and R&B definitely appears in our

songwriting, as well as modern elements.

Review Fix: How was Karma created?

Alex: Jokingly, actually. We were messing around in the studio and I was playing the main guitar riff. Alison began singing the most hilarious stuff and we went hysterical. When the bridge riff came, she immediately sang, “I’m gonna be smiling when you cry.” By then, we were laughing so hard and having the best time. We wrote it in 10 minutes and did not think it was going to make the album, let alone be a single, but our producer Logan loved it so much and thought it was a hit.

Alison: Yeah, what Alex said is pretty spot on. We were in the studio and we have it recorded, actually.

My face was puffy from crying and we started being super silly and messing around with some lyrics I had written. We were laughing so hard and it was such a lovely break from all the sad crying. We both didn’t think it would make the album, but Logan (our producer) said “It’s a hit.”

Review Fix: What makes Karma a special track?

Alison: Karma is a really special track because every time anyone hears it, they laugh and smile and freak out. It’s not meant to be super serious. It’s meant to feel good after you’ve been fucked over. And who on earth has never been fucked over? That’s what I think is so awesome about it. Everyone can relate and feel that laughing relief. It’s cathartic, I think.

Alex: It’s lighthearted yet allows a playful intensity, plus the hooks reel you in. It’s an easy song to sing to and I think most people can relate!

Review Fix: What are your goals for it?

Alison: I hope Logan’s right, and that it’s a hit! It’s going to be so much fun to play live.

Alex: That people can’t get it outta their heads and feel compelled to sing along!

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy it the most?

Alison: My ex. Hahaha.

Alex: Anyone who has been wronged.

Review Fix: If any other band could perform it as well you Royal She, who would it be?

Alison: TLC BABY!

Alex: I’d say Nicki Minaj because she has a great balance of rapping and singing.

Review Fix: What’s next for Royal She?

Alison: We have more singles, then the full album, then TOUR!

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Royal She: Thank you for checking us out and helping us get the word out!

Review Fix: What’s a question I didn’t ask that you wanted to answer? Answer it :)

Alison: Do you believe in Karma? I SURE DO! :)

Alex: Is Karma about a person? Yes, but not just one person. It’s an ode to all the people who intentionally hurt others. It’s reclaiming the expression of “what comes around, goes around.”

Review Fix: Where can people find you?

Royal She: In Los Angeles! But you can also find us on IG: @royalsheofficial, our website www.royalsheband.com, or via email at [email protected].
