If you don’t consider yourself a Jazz or Piano aficionado, Alan Goldberg’s ComeBecome is the place to go to be converted.
The self-described “Boomer,” influenced by artists the likes of The Who, Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP, Chick Corea, Frank Zappa, Goldberg wears his influences on his sleeve. For that reason, if you love any of the aforementioned artists, this is a palatable 11-track experience you can easily dive into.
At the same time, if Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion isn’t your cup of tea, you’ll find this an approachable collection of great tracks that work great as background music as well as tunes you’ll use to unwind to.
Simply put, from start to finish, there’s something for everyone here thanks to sheer variety. The soundscape here is massive, but never to the point where it’ll share you away. Unbroken Chain starts the album off with a special seven-minute journey that is uplifting through. The use of a litany of instruments makes this piece feel like it’s one that takes us to a variety of places. For this reason, it’s got potential in a variety of commercial spaces.
Other tracks the likes of Essential Innocence and On the Trail show off Goldberg’s piano chops and never let you forget why you’re listening in the first place.
The jazz influence is on full display with “Chance, Choice,” Change.” Ultimately it’s a track you’ll return to for several listens.
Grow Entangled is a harder one to describe, but it’s got something special going on. Combining great work from Goldberg, as well as beautiful trumpet work from Mark Morgan, it’s a powerful ballad that could easily be featured in film.
With such a diverse array of tracks, Goldberg delivers a remarkable effort here that begs to be listened to.
