Powered by wonderful songwriting and a voice that’s easy to fall in love with, Laurin Hunter’s EP teaser, The Ontario Sessions, is something special.
If you grew up on singers the likes of Neil Young, James Taylor, John Denver, Jim Croce and Cat Stevens, you’ll instantly be entranced. That lone voice with a guitar routine is one that takes a strong presence to pull off and Hunter is absolutely up to the task on both these tracks.
“Seasons of Silence” starts off the EP in a way that can only be described as powerful. Feeling like a modern day tribute to Ben Fold’s “Brick,” it’s an emotional tale of love, loss and longing that hits hard. A tribute to his late-father, it’s a beautiful track that hits hard.
“Everyday flys away in a haze searching for us.”
Lines like this, combined with Hunter’s passionate and breathy vocals make this a tune you’ll want to love live and yearn for a studio version as well. Simply put, it’s one of the best original tracks we’ve heard in 2025.
The second and final track on this EP, a cover of the Neil Young track, “Don’t Let It Bring You Down,” is another passionate ballad, but this time, shows a less vulnerable and more fiery side of Hunter. All in all, it’s more proof that Hunter is a bonafide talent.
Ultimately, it takes courage to release music as an independent musician and even more to release live tunes. That being said, Hunter has proven himself a formidable voice and someone to get excited about.
