Review Fix Exclusive: Connor Musarra Talks ‘Missed Call,’ ‘Mercury’ And More

Review Fix chats with rapper, songwriter and modern day renaissance man Connor Musarra, who discusses his origin in music, time management skills, goals and standout singles.

About Connor Musarra:

The triple talent, producer, rapper, and songwriter, experienced a successful 2020 with his 2020 Law & Order SVU parody song and has continued to stay on the scene and in the mind of fans, releasing a song a day for a 200-day streak. His producer credits are vast, including work with televisions “Grown-ish” and ESPN and artists Trisha Paytas and Pussy Riot. His unique genre-bending style is a favorite amongst the Gen Z social media crowd and fills every space of his new album, which he wrote, produced, mixed, and mastered on his own.

Over the years, he’s performed a self-booked tour of the East Coast and opened for Girl Talk at NYC’s iconic Webster Hall. The first single, “MISSED CALL,” set the stage for one of 2021’s most sought-after album releases.

Review Fix: When do you sleep?

Connor Musarra: Surprisingly, I have a pretty strict sleep schedule because of my puppy. I literally try to be in bed at like 10pm because my dog wakes me up at like 6 or 7. I need as much sleep as I can possibly get.

Review Fix: How do you manage all the different hats in your life?

Musarra: I’ve just always been a person who needs to be doing a million things at once. So it’s partially the dystopian capitalist imaginary need to be working all the time and partially mental illness probably. Also it just keeps life interesting.

Review Fix: When did you find the time for this album?

Musarra: Most of the songs from the album were started as snippets in my daily song series. But that also meant I needed to double up to finish them on days when I had to make new daily songs. It’s insane but I’ve found sort of a routine in the chaos.

Review Fix: What do you do when you’re not working and how does it affect your music?

Musarra: Lots of puppy related activities, hiking with my homies, finding new places to eat in the city. My music is usually inspired by random events that happened that day, so these activities have a pretty literal effect on whatever my musical vibe is when I start writing..Review Fix: How would you describe this album to someone who might be interested?

Musarra: This album is the chaotic and fun and sad and goofy cycles that everyone goes through. This album is a pure ADD, unapologetic stream of consciousness.

Review Fix: What’s the standout track? What inspired it?

Musarra: MERCURY is probably the standout. It’s a song meant to bring back the feeling of having wild nights out with a crush. Night life and dating is so fucking weird right now. I was just feeling nostalgic for the “before-times”.

Review Fix: What other musicians inspire you? What do you borrow from them before making it your own?

Musarra: I’m always just hopping around on shuffle. Recently I’ve been bumping the new Baby Keem, the new Boldy James x Alchemist, and Kacey Musgraves new album. I usually pull inspiration from the feeling of something more than even the musical style if that makes sense. Baby Keem brings out a lot of care-free pure fun expression, Boldy James & Alchemist give me some dark aggressive storytelling, Kacey Musgraves gives me masterful clean emotional context.

Review Fix: Did you go through a quarter life crisis? Do you think that’s a thing? Tell us. 

Musarra: I don’t know if it was an actual quarter life crisis per se, but I have definitely had many moments of “wow what the fuck am I even doing, I need to switch something up”. I think the term is kind of overdramatic just because like, duh, you’re in your mid to late 20’s, of course you’re gonna have some real existential thoughts and begin thinking about your life as a whole. It’s just natural. I try to just ride things out and be okay with the changes.

Review Fix: How do you want this album to be remembered?

Musarra: I want this album to be remembered as “Damn the guy that’s been doing daily songs on social media actually made a 17 track album that is not bad.”
And/or “I am a beautiful girl, and I would like to make out with Connor because his album is so good”

Review Fix: What’s next?

Musarra: New song ideas on social media every single day. More singles, more music videos, more albums. Hopefully a tour maybe???

Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?

Musarra: Everybody go look real closely at the way my last name is spelled and memorize it. Practice it, use flash cards, say it 10 times in the mirror, call your neighbor and rehearse it with them, whatever it takes.
