Review Fix Exclusive: Void Collapse’s Terry Oberson Talks Standout Work And More

Review Fix chats with Void Collapse’s Terry Oberson, who discusses the band’s origin, creative process and so much more.

Review Fix: How did the project start?

Terry Oberson: I’ve always wanted to do this project. Even when it was beyond my ability. I’ve spent the last twenty years learning how to record, how to play, and how to put everything together to get things to where they are now. It’s been a long road, but hasn’t seemed like it. Every day I think about, or do something towards it, and it has came together.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Oberson: Right now I’m working ahead of Shane. I come up with the subject matter and image of the project. When I know I’m going to be needing drums I go over what kind of sound, the tempo, and the style. And then he records. I don’t try to micromanage that. I prefer that I write to his finished drums. That’s where I start. I’ll record in a drum track, and just write till I get the rhythm tracks down. Then I record, and repeat the process.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Oberson: To me it’s The Cross Eyed Dove off of Gwenda. It’s the first song I wrote for it, and it came out exactly how I wanted it to. I wrote it with a specific feeling in mind, and wanted to add spoken word also. I just went in an did it.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2021?

Oberson: Just to get people to listen. That’s pretty much the only thing there is. We’re doing a four album concept, where each album tells the story of one of the four tarot queens. This album that just came out is Gwenda the Queen of Wands. I’m starting the Queen of Swords right now, so I hope to have most of that done by the end of the year. I’m trying to figure out different ways to get it out there though. That’s a big goal, and harder than it seems, to me anyway.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Oberson: I just want people to get lost in the fantasy elements of it, and hope that they enjoy everything front to back. Shane and I love death metal, so hopefully they connect with that at the very least.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Oberson: We have a split with Before the Storm We Flourished, a Guns N Roses cover, and we’re going to continue to record the next album, and try to get people stoked on it.
