Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter mine, who discusses her new single, H20.
About mine:
mine is the artistic brainchild of songwriter and musician, Mia Schuster. The Fargo, ND native has spent her life exploring physical and mental differences far removed from the town she was raised in. Now studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, she’s finally been given the chance to come into her own as an individual and a musician. Her indie-pop style radiates with positivity and freshness, solidifying her as one to watch on the pop music landscape. Her journey to where she is now is reflected in every chord she writes, allowing listeners insight into her creative world.
Review Fix: Have you really known since the seventh-grade music was it for you?
Mine: I have! I had a really impactful moment that year when I was practicing guitar and singing, and I just knew. My whole body felt it. I knew I was going to be doing this for the rest of my life, that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I’ve had a deep resolve ever since.
Review Fix: H20 has so many layers musically. How did it all come together?
Mine: It was quite the process, let me tell you. For a while, I honestly didn’t think it was going to happen. I was tempted to drop the project on more than one occasion, but I loved the song so much I just couldn’t leave it. I’m so glad I didn’t because I am really happy with how this song came together.
All the layers are pretty much the work of lots of creative hands coming together to build something. I wrote the song, LAEL did music production, Konli did vocal production, Pete White mixed, and Fili Filizzola mastered. So many cool brains behind this one.
Review Fix: Is it hard for you to be positive?
Mine: Yes and no. Sometimes it’s super easy to trust the process and let the universe work things out because it literally always does. Sometimes, though, it feels nearly impossible to let go of control and make peace with worries and fears. Gonna call this one a flip of a coin, depending on my mood for the day.
Review Fix: The lyrics here are Uber powerful- how did they come out of ya?
Mine: Thank you so much, that means a lot to hear. This song sort of wrote itself. I don’t remember doing much thinking in the process, just saying the first thing that came to mind, but that was kind of the whole point of it. When I wrote the song I was trying to get more honest with my lyric writing and stop filtering so much due to a whole load of people-pleasing fears. This song was the first one where I said screw it, I’m saying what I want to say.
Review Fix: When do you think you found your musical sweet spot? Was it by listening to others- or finding your own way?
Mine: I’m going to be honest, I’m still not sure I’ve found it yet! I love creating and I always have new ideas I want to try out and explore. A lot of that is influenced by listening to others. I’ll hear a new song or artist and I’ll get super inspired, and then I have to try it. Somewhere along the way all the ideas sort of blend themselves and form into whatever it is that I’m creating at the moment. I love the process of discovery and creation, I hope I never lose the wonder I find in it now.
Review Fix: What are your goals for this track?
Mine: Honestly, the biggest goal has just been to get it out there. It’s been a big change for me and part of the process has been stepping into being bold and brave and sharing it. The other big goal is that people who listen will be impacted. I hope they too can feel empowered.
Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered in a few years?
Mine: I want it to be remembered as square one. The first big step towards living boldly and making art that is as authentic as I can make it. No more holding back.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Mine: H2O is the first single off of an EP that I am releasing in August! I’m super proud of this project and how it’s sounding, I definitely think it’s some of my best work yet. So stay tuned for more songs that carry a similar energy and message as this one!
