It’s Only Teenage Wasteland 1 Review: Teenager Friendly

Post-apocalyptic stories are a dime a dozen. Some are classics like the “Mad Max” movies while others are there as junk food. “It’s Only Teenage Wasteland” by Curt Pires and artist Jacoby Salcedo falls into the junk food category with its first issue.

The first issue tells of the events before the characters are in a post-apocalyptic world. Javi and his friends are the losers in his high school. He even got caught by his mom masturbating. One day his parents go out of time and he decides to have a party at his house that doesn’t turn out the way he wants. While we know that eventually, we’ll get some post-apocalyptic future, the journey of getting there reads like the typical teenage comedy movie where everything that can go wrong does go wrong. The idea of a bunch of loser teenagers having to live in a post-apocalyptic world is interesting seeing their everyday lives is a chore to read.

Unless you’re a teenager, this first issue would be boring to read. The characters aren’t that interesting.

Javi doesn’t have much of a character except he’s a loser and gay. That’s it. The artwork doesn’t stand out, nor is it interesting. It’s there to make the comic look like a comic. The character designs are the generic teenager designs seen in modern-day comics with one of them having rainbow-colored hair, which is the only interesting thing. The backgrounds, even the small snippets of the post-apocalyptic world, are boring to look at. “It’s Only Teenage Wasteland” has a decent idea, but the dull start and boring art will make some readers not want to continue.

Some may be tempted to read the next issues just to see what happens when a bunch of losers needs to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, but the first issue doesn’t help matters much.
