Family is something everyone has. Some families are happy together, others have more issues than “Time Magazine.” “Seventh Sister” by Simon Birks with artist Majory Yokomizo explores a more extreme version of family troubles.
Soraya lived peacefully until one day her parents agreed to sacrifice her to an entity called Builren. She refuses which causes Builren to take her parents instead, causing her sisters to hate her. Now, living alone, her sisters have started hunting her down to take revenge on their parents.
The comic has an interesting setup and it’s done in an entertaining way. Soraya comes off as a sympathetic character because she’s only an innocent victim of circumstance. Also, the comic makes it seem like Soraya will be dealing with her sisters one by one. In what fashion, that remains to be seen. The plot could be where how Soraya tries to make her sisters see her side of the story and maybe even make them help her save her parents. On the other hand, this plot and her character could lead to some poorly written scenarios with her sisters and maybe a disappointing resolution.
The artwork is the highlight of the comic. It is colorful beyond anyone’s comprehension with all the characters having their own distinct color. On top of that, Yokomizo makes the entire comic look like we are in a magical world where everything is alive. There are plenty of panels that will leave the reader admiring it for a while. It’s like Yokomizo went above and beyond what was asked for.
The first issue of “Seventh Sister” has a lot going for it. It has an interesting plot that could be great or disappointing with art that is beyond colorful and a pleasure to look at. It could end on something great or it could be one of the biggest wastes of time in history with a pretty face.
