Review Fix chats with veteran Public Relations Specialist Raquel Perazzo about her career, exciting new ventures and so much more.
Review Fix: How’d you get into PR?
Raquel Perazzo: I entered the field of public relations after earning my degree in communications. Following graduation, I initially ventured into radio broadcasting but found it didn’t align with my career aspirations. During my time in the music industry with Sony Music, I visited New York and was captivated by its vibrant atmosphere. Determined to make a move, I diligently sought opportunities in the fashion and entertainment sectors, meeting with industry giants like Jessica McClintock, Ralph Lauren, and eventually securing a position with Rubenstein Associates—a prominent PR firm. At Rubenstein, I had the privilege of working with esteemed clients such as the New York Yankees, New York Rangers, New York Ball Drop, and the Tribeca Film Festival.
Review Fix: What’s the hardest part of your job?
Perazzo: The most challenging aspect of my job is navigating situations where clients may resist embracing new ideas. For instance, during the initial implementation of social media, some businesses failed to recognize its value as a powerful tool to amplify their company’s voice and reach a diverse audience. Overcoming resistance to change and fostering an understanding of the evolving landscape can be demanding but is crucial for staying ahead in the dynamic world of communication.
Review Fix: What are some of your favorite clients over the years?
Perazzo: One of the standout experiences in my career has been working with the Times Square Alliance. Managing press for spectacular events such as a fashion show in the heart of Times Square, the iconic New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, and the Memorial Day/Fleet Week celebration provided me with a truly enchanting introduction to the city. It was particularly thrilling for someone who had just moved here.
Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of working with remarkable individuals and organizations, including actor chocolatier Jacques Torres, Anthony Mackie, Robert De Niro and the Tribeca Film Festival, actress Kirsten Vangness, and the HBO Latino Habla Series. Each collaboration brought its own unique charm and contributed to the diverse and fulfilling tapestry of my professional journey.
Review Fix: What advice would you give to someone who wanted to get into Public Relations?
Perazzo: To those aspiring to embark on a journey in Public Relations, I would embrace the art of Connection. Public Relations is not just about messages; it’s about forging genuine connections. Cultivate your ability to understand and resonate with diverse audiences. Every interaction is an opportunity to build relationships that transcend words on a page.
PR is the art of storytelling. Hone your storytelling skills to weave narratives that captivate, resonate, and inspire. Whether it’s crafting a brand narrative or conveying a client’s journey, the power of a well-told story is unparalleled.
Be open to change as a constant companion. Stay curious, be adaptable, and commit to a lifelong journey of learning. The more versatile and open-minded you are, the more doors of opportunity will open.
Remember innovation is your ally. Don’t shy away from trying new approaches, leveraging emerging technologies, or pioneering fresh strategies. The ability to innovate sets you apart and keeps your work on the cutting edge.
Craft a personal brand that reflects authenticity and passion. Consistently demonstrate your unique value and let it shine in every interaction.
Learn from setbacks, celebrate victories, and let every experience shape your growth.
Networking is the lifeblood of PR. Build meaningful connections within and beyond your industry. Attend events, engage on social media and seek mentorship. A strong network not only enhances your career but also enriches your perspective.
Find what ignites your passion within the PR realm. Whether it’s a particular industry, cause, or type of storytelling, let your passion be the driving force behind your work. Passion fuels excellence and sets the stage for impactful PR campaigns.
Above all, remember that Public Relations is not just a career; it’s a journey of crafting narratives, building connections, and leaving a lasting impact. Approach it with an open heart, a curious mind, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference
