Review Fix chats with David Vitello, who discusses his Six Migrations project and more.
About Six Migrations:
Si Migration – Progressive Metal moniker for Portland musician David Vitello, showcases a relentless and vicious, richly themed and singular sounding body of work. Vitello simply mentions “I’m a Gen X subject” when asked where the sound comes from. No matter, as this music speaks for itself through passion, a depth of love.for the craft, and a rare technical virtuosity that more than supports the heavyweight music. David has written over 200 sounds, and it shows in his compositions. Listens may hear echoes of Opeth, Meshuggah, Behemoth, Gojira and even Deftones or Porcupine Tree at times.
Review Fix: How did this project start?
David Vitello: Needed Catharsis. Rage at what humans do to each other, rage at existence, rage and midlife. Just lots of anger, frustration and rage that needed an outlet.
Review Fix: How do you do it all?
Vitello: I’m not sure how to answer this. I guess it’s just years of doing something you love that you find your way. I use a DAW for recording. Went a to a recording arts school in the early 2000s which was kind of a waste. Technology really makes it easy to get ideas recorded no and tinker away for better or worse.
Review Fix: Who inspires you vocally?
Vitello: I grew up in the late 80s and 90s so grunge music and that vocal style was a big influence. Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Pantera. Mellow vocals I like Leanard Cohen and Nick Cave.
Review Fix: What track are you most proud of on this?
Vitello: I really like how Gods turned out with the Gregorian chant type ending and ambiance.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Vitello: I’m working on an instrumental doom project mixing the like of Russian Circles with doom bands like Conan.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Vitello: Just a big thank you to all who listen and enjoy my stuff. It’s been a creative outlet and source of sanity for most of my life and it’s all the more gratifying when other humans get it and enjoy it. Not many people ever listen to or get exposed to what I do because of the current music industry set up.
Review Fix: Where can people find out more?
Vitello: My website is https://www.davidvitellomusic.com/. I don’t do social media.
