Review Fix chats with Dr. Dave, who discusses his sultry new single, “Reserved for Abbie,” which is now available for download on all platforms.
About Reserved for Abbie:
Dr. Dave’s got another magnificent female muse in mind on his latest single, the cleverly titled “Reserved for Abbie,” a seductive, deeply passionate ballad expressing his enduring affection for a onetime girlfriend who lived several states away. A dynamic showcase for the guitarist’s crisp, soulful melodic magic and adventurous improvisation, the romantic-mindedtrack also features the dynamic saxophone of the great Ronnie Laws, whose richly nuanced playing and adventurous soloing takes the song to intense emotional heights. Inviting an illustrious jazz artist to play on the track follows in Dr. Dave’s longtime tradition of having genre stars guest on his recordings – a list that includes Freddie Hubbard, Ernie Watts and legendary San Diego musicians Carl Evans, Jr. (leader of Fattburger) and Hollis Gentry.
Review Fix: What inspired Reserved for Abbie?
Dr. Dave: While on tour, I met a woman named Abbie. We had a wonderful, but brief time together. I wanted her to visit me in California, so I thought that the best way to convey how much our time together meant to me was by writing a song for her. I sent the song to her and she loved it. She visited me in California and we again had a wonderful time. So, the song did its job.
Review Fix: What else makes the song so special ?
Dr. Dave: The female background vocals make it clear about my feelings while at the same time the song remains an instrumental contemporary jazz tune. And, the woman’s voices give the song a sensual female touch.
Review Fix: What does Ronnie Laws add to the song ?
Dr. Dave: The playing of sax by Ronnie Laws adds world class talent of style and technique. It also establishes a dialogue between the guitar and the sax that represents the romantic interaction between Abbie and myself.
Review Fix: Any fun stories or wild moments during the creation process ?
Dr. Dave: The wild moments took place between me and Abbie that stimulated the emotions in me to create “Reserved for Abbie.”
After the recording session, Ronnie and Hubert Laws along with their wives and myself went out and played tennis together. We had a wonderful time. And keep in mind that I had a very accomplished co-writer in GRAMMY AWARD WINNING PRODUCER KAMAU KENYATTA who I approached to work with me on this project – Kamau also played all the keyboard parts. He did the arrangements and was the Producer of the album. And, it goes without saying, that he provided his musical knowledge, skill and expertise throughout the entire process.
Kamau wasn’t told ahead of time that Ronnie and Hubert Laws were going to be working with us, so when he walked into the studio and saw Hubert and Ronnie, he was completely surprised and thrilled! So, we all got to share in that fun and exciting moment of surprise.
Review Fix: The scene is crowded. How do you think you & the song stand out?
Dr. Dave: Very few songs have that the kind of interpersonal and romantic interaction that “Reserved for Abbie” presents.
From the sensual interactions of the sax, guitar and and female singers, the song presents expression of romance that other contemporary/ smooth jazz songs do not possess.
Review Fix: How have my previous experiences in the industry helped this song ?
Dr. Dave: I’ve learned from some of the best musicians, studio engineers and music producers, like the great trumpet player Freddie Hubbard; Ernie Watts, Sax ; Ronnie and Hubert Laws; the great saxophonist John Rekevics, who has done all my horn section arrangements; the late great keyboard player of the Fattburger Band CARL EVANS JR (The Fattburger Band); KAMAU KENYATTA GRAMMY award winning producer; Mike Harris a great studio engineer who has worked with some of the most famous. The great Drummer Ronnie Stewart who I learned so much from about rhythm and tempo. CECIL MCBEE, Jr,. who is the writer of my Spotify hit i named: “Cecil’s Groove” (and son of the great stand-up bass player Cecil McBee Sr And, so many more people in the music industry that have contributed to the knowledge I’ve accumulated from these greats and others who make me who I am today.
Review Fix: How do you want this song to be ultimately remembered?
Dr. Dave: As a passionate and sensual Jazz Love song.
Review Fix: What’s next ?
Dr. Dave: I am going to return to the recording studio to finish this album that was never really completed.
And after that, I will have discussions with my management team headed by the great Publicist
TOM ESTEY. Together will talk about live performances and future appearances.
Review Fix: Anything else I’d like to add ?
