England Dan and John Ford Coley’s 1976 hit, “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight,” is an undoubted classic. One so solid you might not think it needed a modern-day update. That is, until you hear Ellis Hall’s version. Full of the sound you’d expect from the “Ambassador of Soul,” Hall delivers something super sultry, sexy and soothing.
In short, it’s soul personified.
From the start, it feels brand new. The added orchestration gives the track a jazz feel and Hall’s voice is far less informal in tone than the ’76 version and extremely more charming, promoting it as a song that would be a blast to hear live (whereas the original was far more a radio-friendly only track).
Add the background singers and the slowdown of the hook and it’s certainly a fresh take on the classic. At the same time, it never misses the marks that it needs to. If you enjoyed the original and want to sing along, you’ll be able to do that easily. As a result, it’s a perfect blend of old and new.
In the end, Ellis, already an accomplished singer, songwriter and producer puts another feather in his cap with a wonderfully mastered rendition of a classic that is sure to garner its own fanbase entirely.
