A Magazine Worthy of Thor

If you grew up in the late ’80s and early ’90s, you have to remember the multitude of movie-inspired activity books that were released.

At one time, if a film was destined to become a blockbuster, you could bet that the scholastic kid book flier that circulated around your elementary school every month would be selling an activity book based off of it.

Often a great amount of fun for preteens, these books were filled with crossword puzzles, mazes, posters and all sorts of cool stuff, which often gave them a nice bang for their buck. However, over time, these books weren’t released as often, especially with the creation of the Internet, killing a cute niche product that produced a nice following.

Luckily, Disney Publishing Worldwide is attempting to bring these type of books back with the Thor Official Movie Special, which not only has posters and fun stuff for the kiddies, but also an original comic book and interviews with the actors of the film that older readers will enjoy skimming through.

Considering it’s modest selling point at $10.00 as well, this is essentially a must-own for any young fan of the god of thunder.

Nevertheless, it may not be an amazing run through for adults, with all the games mashed in between the interviews and such. Children that dug the Thor film will find plenty of things in here to keep them occupied though. For that reason alone, it’s a worthy purchase for any parent with a young true believer.

Be warned though parents: once your youngin’ gets a look at this book, even Loki himself will have a hard time getting it out of their hands.

Visually, the book has a plethora of high-quality photos and concept art that older comic book fans and movie buffs will enjoy looking through. The Thor timeline, as well as the cast interviews are easy enough to read for children, but provide the kind of information into the film that hardcore fans will enjoy as well. The comic book, “citadel of the Spires,” in spite of its short length, is good-looking and a nice of the film and is another solid section in a book full of different things to read and enjoy.

Overall, the presentation of this 96-page publication is what you’d expect from the Disney brand and the effect it causes on their target demographic is similar. In the end, it’s simply a comfortable and easy to navigate experience and something you won’t mind your kids reading through and playing with.

Even better, it’s something the big kid in you may enjoy as well.
