Wilfred Season One Coverage: Discontinuity

There were plenty of laughs that took place in the third episode of Wilfred entitled “Fear,” but there’s this unavoidable feeling of uneasiness as to where the show is going creatively.

In this mini adventure, Ryan learns why Wilfred planted his wallet at his neighbor Spencer’s house, which causes him to seek vengeance. Throughout this episode, Wilfred tries to encourage Ryan to stand up to his bully of a neighbor. However, Ryan decides to approach the situation his own way and ends up making matters worse. After he lied to Spencer about breaking into his house, pooping in his shoes and stealing his pot, this is one of the funniest moments of the show thus far. While Ryan comes across as a nice and innocent guy, this causes Spencer to become his best friend.

As a result, this becomes a huge inconvenience for him.

Several funny moments involve Ryan and Wilfred, as they walk through the neighborhood and notice that a few of their Indian neighbors were victims of a hate crime. A comment that Wilfred said about this couple will have you laugh out loud for long time. Another part of this episode that was hysterical was when Ryan, Spencer and Wilfred go to a strip club. The funny part about this episode is that we witness Wilfred surrounded by a group of strippers while he makes obscene gestures and display several dance moves, especially on the pole.

The only down side to this episode was that it went off an important topic that involved Ryan’s neighbor Jenna. After we witnessed Jenna’s secret that she had a boyfriend all along, it was not mentioned throughout this episode. It was as if the episode prior did not exist and an important topic was ignored. Otherwise this episode had its moments of laughter, maybe a little more than the previous episode. The negative part of this show so far is that it kind of hit a speed bump in the story line. It seemed like this episode should have taken place later on the season, and the focus should have remained with Ryan’s reaction to Jenna and her boyfriend.

Hopefully, the next episode will get the series’ continuity back on track. The plot here has potential if they stick with it. However, while this new series is very likeable at the moment, it can just as quickly sink as fast as a submarine.

With that being said, as the laugh continue, the plot has to remain in tact.

Things don’t look to be getting better either. Although next week’s episode will have a famous and funny guest star, it doesn’t seem that the trailer gave us enough to determine if the episode will be a success.

Until next week, all we are left to do is sit, scratch our ear and hope for the best.
