WWE Monday Night RAW Coverage: A Night of Talking

Tons of talking and setups for the Summerslam card told the story of last night’s Monday Night RAW. With a new number one contender for the Divas title in Beth Phoenix, Dolph Ziggler now involved in a feud with Alex Riley and the continued drama between CM Punk and John Cena, there was plenty of yammering on the show.

Obviously, with all this focus on story, there wasn’t much in the way of wrestling action.

Luckily, CM Punk’s promo with Triple H was great. While Triple H wasn’t at his best, especially when he told Punk to shut his “Skinny, fat” mouth, it still had its moments. Ultimately, to see these two play cat and mouse with each other made up for the fact that there were only three matches through the first 90 minutes of the show and an ending shoot which lacked the same luster as the opener.

In the end, while this episode may go down as an important RAW, as it helped develop many of the matches for the next pay per view, it wasn’t thoroughly enjoyable.

Matches:

#1 Contenders Battle Royal for the Divas title: The WWE proved their Divas division is a complete joke by having a commercial break during this match. With quick eliminations, every diva in the match was unable to do much of anything. It would be fair to say that the match didn’t feature one wrestling move. Instead, it was punches and kicks. In the end, it was Beth Phoenix who lasted the longest, as she used to strength to eliminate both Bella twins. Afterward, she threw Divas champion Kelly Kelly a bit of a beating as well.

Rey Mysterio and John Morrison vs. R Truth and The Miz:
All four competitors broke a sweat in the ring and it showed. Although there isn’t much drama between the four of them [Yes, Morrison and Truth are feuding, but Mysterio and Miz don’t have any real chemistry.], they delivered a quality match; it was perhaps the only real match on tonight’s card. With some twists and turns in the end, it was nice to see Truth get the win with his jumping complete shot finisher as well.

WWE Tag Team Champions David Otunga and Michael McGillitty vs. Zack Ryder and Santino Marella: This could have been a much better match. Instead, it was filler. Ryder got a nice pop and did his thing, but Otunga and McGillicutty won after a backbreaker/second rope elbow combo. Not the right way to build champs or make the case that Ryder deserves a push. Epic fail.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Evan Bourne: Easily the worst main event on RAW in quite some time. A complete waste of a match that saw Del Rio destroy the talented Bourne and earn the submission victory with his cross-arm breaker.
