With its continuous suspense and clever plot, John Carpenter’s “The Thing” is definitely a Sci- Fi/ Horror film for the ages, an intense horror flick that delivers shivers like no other.
Not only does Carpenter put together a piece of work that will have you guess the whole way through, he also creates great plotlines that will have the viewer on its toes. While you watch this film, you’ll consistently be on high alert; the only option you’ll have as the suspense throughout continues to build is to watch.
This film gets off to an interesting start. Right off the bat it opens with a dog being chased and shot at by Norwegians in a helicopter. When the dog reaches a camp, where scientists are working in Antarctica, the helicopter crashes. This brings attention to the scientists who are curious as to what has occurred. The start of this film will definitely anger you as an innocent dog runs for its life. However, as the plot thickens, you finally know why the dog was being hunted.
Kurt Russell stars [“Escape From New York”] in this horrific remake of the classic from the ‘50s. His role is the typical gritty, no-nonsense, tough as nails type of guy. When the tough gets tougher, he certainly is prepared to take on what ever it is that is harming the camp.
What makes “The Thing” so scary is Carpenter’s ability to build suspense and not let the audience know what they are dealing with. Also, there are plenty of unexpected scenes that will have you jump in fright. When the time comes for the audience to finally find out that some sort of mysterious life form has not only taken over the dog that was being chased, but also members of the scientific crew. What is scary about this life form is its ability to imitate living life, so until you see who has been taken over, the graphic images of this monster will give you nightmares for sure.
Overall, “The Thing” is highly entertaining and is a sure classic. It is fair to say that they don’t make them like this anymore. Carpenter definitely out does himself with this film, because for its time, it is highly scary and will definitely haunt you whenever you think about this movie.
