Their Chicken Really is the Best

salsa-chicken-rice-and-beansTheir bright yellow awning can be seen from the back entrance of Brooklyn College, but the phenomenal smell of their food is often drowned out by the Burger King, McDonald’s, Pizzeria and Halal Food Stand that are encompassed in a small two-block area.

Nevertheless, once you try their food, have it be a simple plate of chicken and rice or something more daring like a fresh salad or wrap, chances are you won’t be going anywhere else for a long time.

Located on 2925 Avenue H, just off the corner of Hillel Place, Best Chicken offers amazing-tasting chicken that is worth every single penny. It may be a bit more expensive than some of the fast-food offerings around the college, but the serving size and taste alone more than make up for the price.

What originally looks, smells and feels like just another Spanish chicken place, upon closer inspection is actually much more. In addition to serving chicken and a full complement of side dishes such as macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, rice and beans and plantains, Best Chicken also offers a wide variety of bagels, paninis and salads. They serve a wide array of West Indian food as well, making it a great place to either have your favorite Hispanic food or to try something different.

But that’s not the best part. All the food is cooked fresh right in front of you, so you know exactly what you’re getting. You’re also able to request your dish the way you want it or even make something up, granted that they have the right ingredients. For this reason, Best Chicken is truly something special. There aren’t many places in Brooklyn where you could have a salami and cheese panini, a chicken Caesar salad and plate of boneless white-meat chicken, mashed potatoes and rice and beans all in one day. That kind of multifaceted approach to fast food is actually quite refreshing.

While the service may be quick and the presentation is more buffet style than anything else, there is nothing fast food-like about the taste of the food or the price for that matter. Having a good size meal will cost you a few more dollars than an extra value meal from McDonald’s. However, the food is healthier and tastes much better than anything you could eat at a burger joint, making it easily worth a few more George Washington’s from your wallet. Going to Best Chicken is kind of like going home and noticing your mother was replaced by a chef that will make you what you really want.

So if you’re sick and tired of running to a fast food chain in between classes or off the train on Flatbush Ave., or just in the mood for something different, there’s no reason not to give Best Chicken a shot at filling your gullet.
