Hung Coverage: A Sexy Start

Episode Commentary: Don’t Give Up on Detroit or Hung Like a Horse

HBO’s favorite pimp and whore are back in season three of “Hung,” which started with a promiscuous bang last week. Unlike previous seasons, which focused more on plot and teased the sexual elements that drew many to the show in the first place, it appears the creative team has finally found the right mixture of drama and debauchery.

And boy, was it fun.

Not only does Ray [Thomas Jane] “perform” with more great-looking women in this one episode than he did in all of season two, but the story involving him, Tanya [Jane Adams] and the always sexy and evil Lenore [Rebecca Creskoff] looks to be the most intriguing story arcs the show has ever had. With a new stud and a business model that she knows works, can Lenore become the premiere pimp in town?

Regardless of what happens this season, the ride that this season premiere already began to set up is, without a doubt, more titillating than the sometimes under-performing sitcom the show was over the first two seasons. There’s depth, character development and oh yeah, a pimp and a man-whore out to live their own “American dream.”

Aside from the sex and Lenore’s role in the episode [which includes a steamy scene as well], there was a nice amount of background and fill-in. Months have gone by since the season two finale and a lot has changed. It was refreshing to see Ray’s family life and home in the best shape they’ve been in since the pilot [that’s not saying much]. The character has been through so much in two seasons that it would be too easy for him to give up. The same thing goes for Tanya, who was stuck working in a coffee house before they managed to take “Happiness Consultants” to the next level.

That whole segment of the episode was also cleverly written. It would have been predictable [yet wildly entertaining] to see Ray have his way with two sex-starved bankers. It ended moving the plot where it needed to be, but simultaneously kept the smarts the show has always had.

With Ray and Tanya on top of things for the time being, it should only be a matter of time until Lenore and her new man make their presence known.

This season is going to be a lot of fun.
