In spite of a weak opening segment, TNA continues to get better in terms of storyline. That, combined with solid wrestling action, proved a fun combination. The show, aside from a less than stellar Knockouts match, didn’t drag and in spite of some ridiculousness [Zema Ion’s gimmick is terrible], most of the content was so much better than previous weeks.
While it was the wrestling action that made the show enjoyable, the current storyline with ODB and Eric Young was one of the funniest on TNA in quite some time. If these two manage to be able to work in the ring together, it could be a great change of pace on a show in desperate need of some lighter moments.
The Pope and Devon’s storyline continues to be built, as well as James Storm and Kurt Angle’s. While their segments weren’t amazingly done, they haven’t lost our attention yet. Considering how poorly written the show has been over the past few months, this is at least a start.
Much like the company, these angles are all works in progress. But unlike a few months ago, there’s at least a glimmer of hope.
Matches:
Wild Card Tag Team Tournament: Christopher Daniels and Rob Van Dam vs. Frank Kazarian and AJ Styles: A good opening match that featured four amazing talents. Too bad none of them are over. Most of the match was routine, but it was high energy and fun. After about eight minutes, Kazarian got the win with his reverse piledriver, after RVD turned his back on Daniels.
Anthony Nese vs. Zema Ion: Both of these guys are so talented. Ion’s gimmick is annoying as hell, but the kid can go. Nese has this quiet charisma, reminiscent of a young Dean Malenko. With a ton of aerial maneuvers and suplexes, this was the best match on TNA in weeks. The finish was cool and surprisingly old school as well- after Ion pulled Nese up after a pin and was about to put a move on him, Nese rolled him up for the win. Cannot wait until these two wrestle again.
Brooke Tessmacher vs. Tara, with Madison Rayne as special guest referee: This match was supposed to split up this tag team, but instead they had fun at Rayne’s expense. There were times when the action stalled, but the finish, which saw TNT attack Rayne was almost worth the wait.
Wild Card Tag Team Tournament: Shannon Moore and Anarquia w/ Rosita and Sarita vs. Eric Young and ODB: The team of ODB and Young is a match made in heaven- it’s too bad the team of Moore and Anarquia is a complete joke. At any rate, the match was fun, even if it was a bit sloppy. The crowd’s response said something. Keep these two together.
Street Fight: Bully Ray and Robert Roode vs. Jeff Hardy and Sting: A decent street fight as the heels took it to the faces in the early going. Chains, kendo sticks and garbage pails were all used in a hardcore good time. The pace was slow in the beginning, but once the action got back in the ring, things picked up nicely. Once the good guys made their comeback, Sting threw his trademark Scorpion Death Drop DDT, while Hardy hit a top rope splash on Roode through a table for the win.
