Louisville-based hip hop group Villebillies have released their third (and long-awaited) full-length studio album, APPETITE FOR DYSFUNCTION (Island Earth Music). The 16-track album includes the single, “Talk To Me†which can be heard on terrestrial, satellite and Internet radio shows across the country.
APPETITE FOR DYSFUNCTION, while exuding the cross-genre sound the group has been known for since its 2006 self-titled debut, is lyrically progressive, reflecting the years following their last studio release (2008’s FROM THE BELLY OF THE BEAST). The band has emerged unscathed with a collection of new material that unites the nostalgia of the “early times†with the innovation that continues to keep Villebillies difficult to define.
The moody, atmospheric opening piece, “Midnight†makes it clear that dense, impeccable harmonies and a slight twang do not mean a lighthearted listen. It’s only setting up for the next track, “Pure to the Grain†which, supported by an upfront rhythm section, melodic hook, and rock sensibility, reminds that Villebillies’ four frontmen are also lyric spitters of formidable force. The blues-groove of “Rocket Queen†further demonstrates the versatility and virtuosity of this collective, which regularly includes anything from hip hop style samples to hillbilly banjo licks to classical strings arrangements. But the standout is the dark surprise of “Talk To Me,†a track that is so musically attractive and accessible that it only barely disguises the point of view of a serial killer.
Villebillies is a true band, having played hundreds of shows across the United States, sharing the stage with independent and major acts, from Hed PE to Hank Junior to Method Man. Villebillies’ originality and authenticity has turned the heads of even the most skeptical audiences, earning the band a large and diverse fan base.
“…filled with subtly clever production flourishes…giant hooks, the band’s collective (and essential) sense of humor, and guitars…the Villebillies write songs, not chord changes, and they sing instead of shout.â€
Courier-Journal
“A unique blend of hip-hop and rock like you have never heard.
It’s like Outkast meets Kid Rock.â€
