Single Review: Bento: Words of Love

This track is a flashback.

In an effort that ultimately feels like The Beatles meets Duncan Sheik, Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies has struck an acoustic rock powered chord with the ballad “Words of Love,” off his new album, “Diamond Days.”

A fun radio-friendly tune, the guitar work, silky and simple lyrics and Gillies’ throwback voice give the piece a wonderful balance. Easy to understand, Gillies’ vocals are warm. While he doesn’t necessarily sound like any one in particular, the lack of bells and whistles on the track and Gillies straight ahead approach make the piece feel dated, in the best way possible.

The addition of electric-powered riffs and piano work during the chorus and the latter verses add some depth to the sound. The simple message and the effort put through Gillies vocals and the impressive musicianship makes for an engaging experience. Like any good song scribe, Gillies makes his journey one you can feel. Even if you aren’t in a lovely-Dover mood, the track is one that can put a smile on your mug.

In a day and age where sex sells more than substance, it’s nice to see Gillies armed with just his heart and guitar. In just a few minutes, the former hard-rocker transforms into a modern rock threat to be reckoned with.
