WWE Money in the Bank Coverage: Cena New WWE World Heavyweight Champion

Talk about an action-packed night of full-contact ballet.

Between two insane Money in the Bank ladder matches and two damn good title matches, Money in the Bank more than made up for an hour of filler.

Seriously, Adam Rose vs. Damien Sandow on a pay per view? How did Layla and Summer Rae manage to get on the card? Who cares about these feuds? This is storyline that belongs on Superstars and Main event, not a pay per view.

Regardless, with Seth Rollins’ capturing of the Money in the Bank title shot and John Cena the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion, there’s plenty of room creatively for things to intrigue in time for Summerslam.

Matches:

Luke Harper and Erik Rowan vs. WWE Tag Team Champions Jimmy and Jey Uso: The challengers were tough early on, but the Usos used their usual high-flying offense to keep things even. Harper helped his team get back in control later as he stepped on Jey’s head on the outside and hit a Senton Splash, while Rowan added more physicality. Harper then nearly won with a nasty Yakuza Kick and continued to work over Jimmy in the corner. The quick tags continued until Rowan missed a pair of moves and allowed Jimmy to get into the match. Jimmy hit a pair of Samoan Drops on the challengers and followed it up with a Butt Bump in the corner and a Corkscrew Back Splash off the top on Harper. Jimmy then hit a pair of Super Kicks on Harper, but couldn’t get the pin. Jimmy then took Rowan out on the outside, which allowed Harper to hit the Big Boot. Harper then scored a near-fall with a beautiful sit-out Powerbomb. Harper then hit a pair of Suicide Dives on both Usos to put the match completely in their control. Harper and Rowan nailed Jey with a Double Chokeslam, but quickly Jimmy broke up the pin. Rowan got cocky however and went to the top, but Jimmy hit the kick on Rowan and went for the Superplex. After both Usos Superplexed Rowan, they both hit Top Rope Splashes on him to retain their titles.

Divas Champion Paige vs. Naomi Knight w/Cameron: Great pace early on as Naomi worked over Paige on the outside with her usual high-flying offense. The slew of submissions and near-falls that followed made this match one of the most athletic Divas matches in years. Paige eventually got back in the match after countering a Split-Legged Moonsault. Another counter later, Paige hit a version of Konnan’s old Package Cradle DDT for the win.

Damien Sandow (Paul Revere) vs. Adam Rose: This was filler and it was obvious. Although the match was decent, there wasn’t enough momentum behind this feud and Sandow’s irreverence the last few months didn’t help. Sandow did hit the Your Welcome, but Rose kicked out. A few moves later, Rose hit the Party Foul for the win.

Traditional Money in the Bank Match: Rob Van Dam vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Seth Rollins vs. Jack Swagger w/Zeb Colter: Kingston got the match started off right with an insane Sonic the Hedgehog-like Springboard from the top of the ladder to the top rope to the outside. The Ambrose-Rollins war was heated early as well as Ambrose Butterfly Suplexed Rollins on a ladder. RVD continued the craziness with a Rolling Thunder on Rollins with a ladder across the first rope in the corner. RVD then hit the Five Star Frog Splash on Swagger, but couldn’t get to the briefcase as Swagger and Kingston stopped him. Swagger soon hit a Swagger Bomb on RVD from the top of the ladder, before Ambrose hit a picture perfect Superplex on Rollins off the top of the ladder. There was then a race to the top between Rollins and Ambrose that Swagger broke up, but Ambrose nailed a nice DDT on Swagger to keep the match more of a war between the two Shield members. However, Ambrose apparently injured his shoulder and was escorted to the back by WWE medical staff. Kingston then nearly won after her Back Body Dropped Rollins on to another ladder. Soon enough, all five remaining competitors went crazy, hitting signature moves in wild succession. When Rollins looked like he was about to win, Ambrose returned and nearly won until Kane interfered and hit the Chokeslam and Tombstone Piledriver on Ambrose. Seconds later, Kane held the later for Rollins who easily climbed up the ladder to get the WWE World Title shot.

Goldust and Stardust vs. Ryback and Curtis Axel: A filler match that saw Stardust hit the Cross Rhodes on Axel and win a few moves later with a Rollup after Goldust took out Ryback outside the ring. After the bell, the brothers in paint hit a Bearhug/ DDT combination on Axel.

Alexander Rusev w/Lana vs. Big E. Langston: Rusev was in trouble for most of the match as Langston had him scouted several times. His first real test, Rusev fought back and hit the Super Kick and in spite of Langston’s resilience, Rusev got the submission win with The Accolade.

Summer Rae vs. Layla, Fandango Special Guest Referee: This was a fun encounter as Fandango enjoyed himself immensely during the match. The CM Punk chants by the crowd however showed the crowd’s disinterest in the match. Layla eventually won with a Super Kick.

Money in the Bank Match for WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Bray Wyatt vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena vs. Randy Orton vs. Kane vs. Roman Reigns vs. United States Champion Sheamus vs. Antonio Cesaro w/Paul Heyman: Kane and Orton were beaten on early by the other competitors as everyone jockeyed for position. Kane was particularly resilient however, going through every opponent except Orton at one point with Big Boots and Chokeslams. Kane even helped Orton climb the ladder at several other points. Soon enough, Cesaro had a shot at the belts, but Sheamus got involved. Wyatt as well had several moments of dominance before the match spilled on to the outside. Orton then hit his trademark DDT on Sheamus on the outside and then again tried to climb the ladder, but Cena and every other competitor began to fight for an opportunity to climb and grab the belts. Sheamus was the next competitor who went on a tear, hitting the Irish Curse and White Noise before the Brogue Kick on Cena in his attempt to climb the ladder. Although Kane interfered, Sheamus took him out on the outside.

What then occurred was Cesaro connecting a ladder with another one before Reigns tilted it in order to throw off Cesaro and Sheamus. Cena then tilted it back and the anarchy continued. After Orton and Kane continued to dominate, Reigns Speared Kane, but Orton nailed him with the ladder. Reigns fought back with the Superman Punch, his inside-out Leg Drop and the Spear, but before he could climb up the ladder, Cena got back in the ring and the two engaged each other. Reigns hit the Spear on Cena after the two traded blows. After Reigns set up the ladder, he began his climb before Orton took him down with his signature Backbreaker. With no one in his way, Orton took too much time and Wyatt hit the Sister Abigail on him. Del Rio followed up with two nasty kicks, but he caught the Brogue Kick from Sheamus. The Celtic Warrior then tried to climb, but Cesaro nailed him with the European Uppercut and a Neutralizer. Orton then jumped in and hit the RKO and went to climb before Reigns jumped in and the two tangoed on the ladder steps.

With Reigns dispatched by Kane, Cena interfered and hit the Attitude Adjustment on both Kane and Orton and climbed the ladder to win the belt.
