Robert Nelson Talks ‘NHL 2K’

Review Fix’s Patrick Hickey Jr. chats with “NHL 2K” Producer Robert Nelson, who discusses the game’s return to mobile after a three-year exodus, as well as its development process and for the first time ever, the inclusion of the MyCareer mode in an NHL game. The only complete NHL game on the iOS and Android, the once legendary 2K series looks to make a big time return on your favorite mobile devices.

What has the development process been like for this game?

Robert Nelson: It has been exciting. It has been a long time since we’ve gotten a chance to work on an NHL game. As a developer we’ve worked on a number of mobile games since NHL 2K11 was released and we’ve learned a lot about what is important to gamers on that platform. Knowing which features mean the most to someone playing a sports game on a mobile device. We have added all sorts of tools in our tool belt over the last few years and it was really fun to get a chance to use them all on an NHL game.

Will this game feel similar to older games in the series or has it been rebuilt?

Nelson: After reviewing all of the feedback we received on NHL 2K11 we realized that what we had was really fun gameplay that people still enjoy playing to this day, but it was ancient in terms of mobile focused features. As I said we have learned a lot over the years about what matters to mobile gamers. Our goal this year was to keep the gameplay fun and accessible while bringing the entire game up to the modern age of mobile games. Our focus during development was on making a few key changes to what the original game did so well so that it maintained what people loved about it, while making big changes to the areas it was lacking.
