Usagi Yojimbo: Grasscutter #1 Review: Something Different From Something Great

Usagi Yojimbo has seen and done it all, but nn the newest comic “Usagi Yojimo: Grasscutter” it seems like this could be on a one-of-akind adventure. The first issue so far looks like it has a lot of promise.

A Swordsman with otherworldy powers named Jei has just murdered Lord Sakana-No-Ashiyubi’s men. There is also famed assassin on the loose. Yojimbo hears about this and is now trying to figure out how to deal with the two of them. Not to mention the local daimyo has some plans of his own to eradicate Jei.

Here is a concept we’re all familiar with: a main lead has to go against two powerful enemies before they kill everyone. It’s been done before with varying degrees of success. Stan Sakai can make this storyline interesting with Usagi Yojimbo.

The setup usually makes or breaks these types of stories. Considering the type of world this is, this setup seems the norm and this can lead to some interesting results. Stan Sakai usually does have a way of surprising his readers, so that should be expected.

What’s there to say about the art besides it’s Stan Sakai? If you’ve been following his work over the years you know what to expect. There are some parts that don’t look all that right. Lady Tomoe’s facial features look terrifying. She looks like Sakai tried to make her look more like a human female and the end result looks like something out of a horror movie.

“Usagi Yojimo: Grasscutter #1” has a basic story setup, but there is a lot of room for it to go places. It has Sakai’s usual storytelling and art that will make this a fun story despite some not so impressive things.
