Review Fix Exclusive: David Doub Talks ‘The Trails and Tribulations of Miss Tilney’

Review Fix chats with comic book writer David Doub, who discusses “The Trails and Tribulations of Miss Tilney.” Breaking down the inspiration and goals for the book, Doub lets us know just how influential the series has been to the Dusk Comics brand.

Review Fix: What was the inspiration for this book?

David Doub: I’ve never been one for steampunk, but I do love the Victorian era.  You could almost call it the teenage years of human development where we thought we had all the answers and were putting on airs because of those assumptions, but we still had a long way to go.  It’s fun to have cold modern logic and old world superstitions still living side by side each other.

Review Fix: What did you learn from the previous volumes in the series?

Doub: This is the first book we’ve ever done like a traditional comic, full color and only 32 pages each.  Content wasn’t the issue it was the learning curve of production.  But that is one of the joys of comics, there is always something new to learn.

Review Fix: What do you think makes it special?

Doub: For Ms. Tilney I tried to emulate the old penny dreadful where the stories were just lurid fun for the common folk.  To further that feel, there are backup text pieces just like what a real penny dreadful would have.

Review Fix: Without giving anything away, what is the crux of the story?

Doub: Our intrepid aspiring reporter, Ms. Tilney, delves further into the mystery of the murderous tigers.  Aided by such colorful allies, who line the grim Doctor and lustful Lord Harwood, Ms. Tilney may have any sides to this mystery that is safe for her.

Review Fix: Did any comics you read as a kid play a role in this one?

Doub: I loved superhero comics as a kid, but my eyes were opened during the 90s where all the Indy comics and styles started to break out.  From Vertigo to Tundra, Caliber to Millennium there were so many comics doing their own thing showed I could too.

Review Fix: What type of comic book fans will enjoy this the most?

Doub: Horror fans.  Steampunk and Victorian fans.  Action adventure fans.  People who enjoy a fun and witty comic.

Review Fix: What is special about the art here?

Doub: The eye for detail we put into the setting and locale of 1890 London.  We try to be authentic as possible without making it a history lesson.  To the Old Vic theater to the stylings of the Gibson girl we did our research.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Doub: Volume 3, the closing chapter of this arc is currently being colored.  Also, some progress is being made on the next story arc.
