Hellboy’s adventures through Hell continue in Mike Mignola’s “Hellboy in Hell #7: The Hounds of Pluto†and this story has a lot going for it.
After being found by two doctors, Hellboy is told that he has some kind of parasite that is eating away at his soul. The two doctors say they can help cure him. Along they way, they meet one of the doctor’s old acquaintances who does not like him that much decides to take his revenge.
The vest thing about this comic is that it goes even further into Mike Mignola’s version of Hell. Here we learn more of its denizens as well as how it operates. It’s actually a relief to see a well-crafted Hell that is not just a lack of fire with demons torturing the condemned.
As for the story itself, there is a lot of promise to be found here. Hellboy having some kind soul eating disease is pretty heavy stuff when you consider he is a demon and demons usually don’t have souls. The way the events play out are interesting and probably one of the best in “Hellboy†history.
One thing that will raise eyebrows is one scene where the doctors are quoting Act 4, Scene 1 of “Macbeth†while performing a spell. It comes out of nowhere and just seems like Mignola is showing off his Shakespeare knowledge. It’s also an overused way to make people cast spells.
Dave Stewart returns to do the art for this story. It’s everything a “Hellboy†fan expects from this comic. Since this takes place in Hell Stewart captures Mignola’s vision wonderfully. Everything looks dark, gloomy and creepy. Just the right touch to Hellboy’s biggest adventure yet.
“Hellboy in Hell #7: The Hounds of Pluto Part 1†is everything a “Hellboy†fan wants. There’s a great story, art and the great writing that’s expected from Mignola.
