Paul Tobin’s “Colder†series is chock of some bloody disgusting, messed up events and imagery that’s it’s almost like a modernist masterpiece in comic form. Tobin continues this crazy train in “Colder: Toss the Bones†in which the first issue is everything comics readers come to expect from this series.
In this continuation, we find Declan is trying to live his life after suffering serious injuries done by Nimble Jack. However, Nimble Jack is still hunting Declan and wants to eat him.
There are certain sequels that seem to serve no purpose but to ride the popularity of the series. This sequel, however, does not come across as that. Although in truth this entire first issue is a lot more about Jack than Declan. We spend more time with Jack than with any other character.
In fact, the only real reason this comic is interesting is because of Jack. Jack spends the comic being all out crazy, going through worlds and having fun killing people. Declan is out shopping. It’s telling that the character who’s supposed to be the villain is much more likable than the actual main lead.
The artwork by Juan Ferreyra still brings out the contrasts in this world. There’re the bright colors alongside the dark colors that show off a horror filled world. The art does come across as more like it’s poking fun at the fact that this is supposed to be horror than embracing it. Surprisingly, this works to the comic’s advantage. It fits more as this all out craziness than being serious.
“Colder: Toss the Bones†is a fantastic continuation of a great comic. Even though Jack steals the show, his antics are more than enough to keep readers entertained. Not to mention the art looks more colorful than it should oddly fit the comic’s atmosphere nicely. This is one series that never fails to delight.
