Review Fix chats with Pet Sun’s Stephane Senecal-Tremblay, who discusses the band’s new single, “Dark Planet.†Breaking down the band’s origin and goals for the future as well Senecal-Tremblay lets us know exactly why we should keep our eyes on them.
Review Fix: What makes the band special?
Stephane Senecal-Tremblay: I’m not sure I can answer that but I think Parth, Sam, and Nic are pretty special.
Review Fix: How did you guys get together?
Senecal-Tremblay: Sam, Parth, and I went to High School together in Hamilton. I met Nic in University in Montreal. We started the band after we all graduated a bit over a year ago.
Review Fix: What inspires you guys?
Senecal-Tremblay: At the time I was writing the song I was listening to lots of doom. Most of it I discovered on this blog run by this mega chill dude in England. Essentially it’s a massive Nuggets collection of proto-metal. That was definitely a treat to come across and inspired me to write lots of new sounding stuff. Proto-metal really wasn’t that defined  back in the late 60’s and 70’s. It was just a bunch of dudes who liked Sabbath and started writing super heavy riffs. Very interesting stuff and very inspirational! Some of the songwriting is as good as some Sabbath and you’ll never have heard of the band. It’s crazy!
Review Fix: How was “Dark Planet” written?
Senecal-Tremblay: The riff started off with this jam I had written in DADGAD tuning. Once I added the verse and chorus in I realized that we weren’t really using the top two strings so we just put them back to standard cause you know why bother haha. The breakdown section at the end was added on last. Initially we had this kinda Hendrix style step down that led into a solo. Sounded too much like Hey Joe so we scrapped it.
Review Fix: How is it a departure from your other work?
Senecal-Tremblay: A lot of our previous stuff was more traditional garage rock- fast rippers! Recently I’ve been writing stuff on my acoustic, that might be why this track is a bit slower… We want every release to be different so we’re always trying new stuff.
Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone check this song out?
Senecal-Tremblay: It’s got a bit of everything :) !!! Riffs, mellow melodies, heavy chorus, whatever!! I hope some non-rock n roll fans hear it and are like “yo that’s sick!†and I also hope rock n rollers hear it and say “yo that’s dope!â€
Review Fix: What’s next?
Senecal-Tremblay: We’re releasing our EP, Shade Driver, on December 4th. After that we’ve got a video or two coming out and then some other music in early/mid 2016 but I can’t say.
