The Immortal #1 Review: OK

Bounty hunters and sci-fi seem to go together perfectly. So it should come as no surprise that many sci-fi stories have bounty hunters in them. Of course, there are times when a bounty hunter may lose his memory and his past comes and tackles him. That’s the case with Darryl Knickrehm’s “The immortal.” It sounds great, but the overall experience is underwhelming.

Z is a bounty hunter who has recently died and has been regenerated. Problem is, his memory is hazy about what happened in his last job. Now he has to go back and retrace his steps to find out what happened.

It’s the classic story of someone who’s usually an assassin getting amnesia and his entire life is coming back to kill him. It’s not a terrible plot line if done properly. Knickrehm does a fairly decent job on making the comic interesting to a point. Z is a decent enough character and the narrative flows nicely.

The main problem with the story is how generic everything is. The aliens are the typical aliens, the events are the typical events seen in these stories. That doesn’t make the comic a total disaster; it just makes it OK.

The art also falls into the decent category. There is some talent hidden here that just doesn’t come out. Z is a nice looking character and some of the backgrounds are truly spectacular. The designs of the aliens, on the other hand, are about as generic as they come. Nothing about them stands out and they all just seem to meld together into a heap that you really don’t notice them.

“The immortal #1” has a plot that can be done nicely, but makes it mediocre. The story is OK at best as is the art. It’s still worth checking out till the end to see if it does improve, and this comic does have the potential to improve.
