Tribeca Film Festival Coverage: Super Sex Review: Adorable

Getting dad a hooker for his birthday could go wrong in a plethora of ways, but Matthew Modine’s “Super Sex” tackles the subject in a light-hearted and charming way, making it one of the most enjoyable short films at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.

Beginning with a scene with Kevin Nealon and Elizabeth Perkins, the two have a playful banter that many children often have when their parents get older: what do you get them for their birthday? After a few wacky suggestions, they decide something a bit unconventional, to say the least.

Lets get dad a hooker for his birthday.

At its heart, this film is essentially four or five scenes, powered by smooth and connectable dialogue, a testament to Matthew Modine’s ability as a writer and a director. Add in a silly appearance or two from Efren Ramirez and this short manages to do a lot in a short amount of time. Truth be told, all solid shorts have this ability, to pack in as much as possible. This is what “Super Sex” has in spades.

Almost like a great major league pitcher, “Super Sex” is able to mix things up as well and keep you guessing. While there is a weird moment towards the end of the negotiation scene, the climax is a sweet one that fully takes advantage of Ed Asner’s star power and puts a smile on your face before the credits roll.

Thanks to a witty cameo from Asner and the sweet and perfectly trashy performance Ruby Modine, “Super Sex” ends up being something completely different than you were expecting- in the best way possible.
