Review Fix Exclusive: Inside ‘Lynn and the Spirits of Inao’

Review Fix chats with David Tollari Founder of Bloomylight Studio, Projet Manager / Creative Director about their new indie 2D adventure game, “Lynn and the Spirits of Inao.” Discussing the game’s origin and goals, lets us know why fans of anime and manga will absolutely fall in love with it.

Review Fix: What has the development process been like?

David Tollari: So far, the development process always went in a good atmosphere! To be honest, give birth to Lynn and the Spirits of Inao is way more complicated that it seems, and more than once we thought the game will never see the day. Being an indie dev means being autonomous, especially on the financial aspect. But we are motivated to realize a dream : offer the players a game inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s animation movies (Spirited away, Princess Mononoke).

Review Fix: Lets talk about the game’s art style. How much time and effort has gone into create the look of the game?

Tollari: Lynn and the Spirits of Inao has it’s « hand-drawn » art’s style full of details because its objective is, as mentioned earlier, to get close to Studio Ghibli’s work and its « manga » style. The universe is imbued with japanese culture, as much in its scenario as in its graphic art.

Lynn and the Spirits of Inao’s artistic direction has been set to a high quality level for an independent project : the goal is to have this japanese manga aesthetic, reminding Hayao’s Miyazaki’s work.The project started was originally created more than 5 years ago, and many sacrifices have been done to reach this point. We all have an extra job that allows us to live and work on the project at the same time.

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy this game the most?

Tollari: Lynn and the Spirits of Inao is a game made for a large audience, from Retro gamers generation to manga enthusiasts. With an easy to learn and intuitive gameplay (zelda style), it is perfect for beginners and will satisfy hardcore gamers as well.

Review Fix: What games have inspired this one?

Tollari: Our main inspirations are Zelda : Ocarina of Time and Muramasa : The Demon Blade.

Review Fix: How do you want this game to be remembered?

Tollari: We want the players to remember Lynn and the Spirits of Inao as a game who made them travel and dream in an enchanting world inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s work.

Review Fix: Bottom Line, why should someone play this?

Tollari: Lynn and the Spirits of Inao is unique, by proposing a quality visual rendering with a hand-drawn graphic style and an intuitive gameplay, with originals and effective mechanics. Moreover, on the moral aspect, the game is different because you don’t kill enemies, you free them from their torments. Thus, even when Lynn is fighting an enraged spirit, she is doing something good and doesn’t sow destruction.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Tollari: We already have a few ideas! If our dynamic duo (Lynn and Aku) is successful among the players, we might keep up the adventure with them. There are still so many possibilities and paths to explore.
