Inside ‘Super Phantom Cat’

Review Fix chats with Jason Yeung, Chief Executive Officer, Veewo Games, who discusses the success of “Super Phantom Cat” and the differences between the Android TV version and the iOS version. Downloaded more than 440,000 times since arriving on iOS and Google Play earlier in 2017 (including premium and F2P). Super Phantom Cat has also been a huge hit with reviewers and being featured several times by Apple.

Review Fix: For those who haven’t played it, what is “Super Phantom Cat”?

Jason Yeung: Super Phantom Cat is a retro-inspired 2D platformer that pays homage to 8- and 16-bit classics Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country, and Sonic The Hedgehog.

Review Fix: What makes “Super Phantom Cat” special?

Yeung: Players will immediately see that the art and music are very special. Super Phantom Cat has a unique, colorful look — and the soundtrack is extremely catchy! Players love the fact that the controls are fully customizable — and very responsive. The game has a deceptively simple look, but it’s a hardcore platformer with deep gameplay.

Review Fix: How does it feel to get such a warm reception since the game was released?

Yeung: As an indie studio from Mainland China, it was an honor to have Super Phantom Cat featured on both the App Store and Google Play. The global features have really pushed Veewo Games into the spotlight — and we love being able to give players such a fun, welcoming game to spend time with. We can’t wait to introduce more high-quality Chinese indie titles to the world!

Review Fix: What are your goals for “Super Phantom Cat”?

Yeung: Our goal for Super Phantom Cat was to bring back the feeling of warm summer days spent in front of a Nintendo console. Retro gamers can play classic games on original hardware every day, but we wanted mobile users of all ages to be able to experience that as well!

Review Fix: What are the differences between the iOS version and the Android TV version?

Yeung: The iOS version is meant to be a “premium” offer that users pay upfront to enjoy. Android TV — like the standard Android build — has in-app purchases and gamepad support. It was designed for both mid-core and casual players. Super Phantom Cat is even more fun if you play on a big screen TV.

Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone play “Super Phantom Cat”?

Yeung: Because there’s nothing cooler than becoming a Phantom Cat — a “super cat” that can save the world.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Yeung: We are preparing to start development on Super Phantom Cat II — which will have even more beautiful graphics and tons of gameplay with parkour and swimming. Stay tuned.
