Review Fix chats with “Dawnroot†developer Sean Bacon, who takes us under the hood of the nifty retro-inspired game and lets us know what the team is up to in early alpha. Preparing a demo for PAC and GDC next year, “Dawnroot†appears to be a fun title that will surprise many in 2017.
About Dawnroot:
Dawnroot is an isometric adventure RPG with 2D platforming combat where your actions have consequences and moral choices are gray. Set in a world inspired by both Western folklore, Dawnroot is our attempt to follow both visually and tonally the 16bit classics of our childhood like Final Fantasy Tactics, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Chrono Trigger; although we would also add a touch of A Link to the Past.
…but only if Rick & Morty were also stuck in that world.

Review Fix: What games inspired this one?
Sean Bacon: Dawnroot is our attempt to follow both visually and tonally the 16-bit classics of our childhood like Final Fantasy Tactics, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Chrono Trigger; although we would also add a touch of A Link to the Past, but only if Rick & Morty were also stuck in that world.
Review Fix: Lets talk about the art. What inspired that?
Bacon: Again, a lot of the old RPGs influenced our art style as well as Secret of The Kells, 1920s New York and retro-futuristic derivatives like diesel and steam punk.
Review Fix: What has development been like?
Bacon: No one on the team lives near anyone else, so communication is done almost exclusively online; however everyone is really good at collaborating and critiquing ideas.  We are a long way from being finished with this project, but I couldn’t be happier with the team that we have.
Review Fix: With all the competition on the mobile market and in the indies now, how difficult was it for you guys to try and make something that stood out?
Bacon: Well since we are still in early alpha I would have to say that we are still actively working on that part. My hope is that both our artistic style and the eventually quality of the art is what helps us to stand out, but again it is too early to really say.
Review Fix: What are your goals for this game?
Bacon: For the game to be a fun, enjoyable and memorable experience.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Bacon: Continuing development, finishing a demo and taking that to GDC and PAX early next year.
Review Fix: Anything else you want to say?
