Hell’s Kitchen Recap: Family Night

Dress the kiddies because it’s family night at the one and only “Hell’s Kitchen.” The Sad news is the chefs need adult supervision more than the kids in an all new episode.

In this episode, the dining room was decked out to look like a library, bookcases and posters saying “quiet, please” and all. He connection, according to Ramsay, is cookbooks. The challenge was in four minutes one chef would use books with giant letters on them to spell out an ingredient they want to use and then the other chefs need to spell out other ingredients as long as they use at least one letter already in use. Think, “Scrabble.” They then had to cook a dish using these ingredients.

You would think these people would have played at least one game of “Scrabble” in their life. Ramsay told the Red that they couldn’t use snap peas because it’s two words going in different directions.

The Blue had crab, peas, okra, ribeye, bacon, yam and onion. The Red had carrot, chicken, lime, beans, peas and turnip.

At tasting, Paulie got really defensive when his dish got one point. Well, his okra was raw and his ribeye wasn’t cut properly, so what did he expect? His other teammates got 3s and 4s with a total of 17 points which beat out the Red’s 16 points.

The Blue’s reward was riding in bumper cars on ice (yes, on ice) and lunch at an unnamed steakhouse. Whoever came up with that bumper cars on ice idea is a genius. It looks like a ton of fun.

Meanwhile, the Red had to prepare for one of “Hell’s Kitchen’s” most famous services: family night. This included making cookies, blowing up balloons and picking up all the crayons that Marino “accidentally” dropped (ha ha.)

There has never been a family night where there were no mistakes. This season is no exception as both kitchens had many problems.

In the Blue, Devon started by making a grilled cheese sandwich where the cheese wasn’t melted at all. How does one bring up a grilled cheese where the cheese isn’t even melted? Later, Paulie made a kid’s burger that was still raw inside. Yet again, Ramsay had a talk with the entire team in the pantry. Paulie would then bring up Johnny’s bass (raw) which also caused everything else to come up raw.

In the Red, Shaina brought up an undercooked pizza even when Heidi said it wasn’t ready yet. Aziza also had a lot of garnish ready for dishes that weren’t called. Later, Wendy made a raw lamb and Heather made a raw salmon because she did not cook it skin side down. Heather should know by down that salmon needs to be cooked skin side down.

Both kitchens may have completed service, but both teams had to nominate people. The Blue nominated Paulie and Devon. The Red nominated Aziza and Wendy. Ramsay eliminated Aziza.

While Aziza was a terrible chef and deserved to be sent home, Paulie also had to go home. Both messed up royally in these past few episodes. It looks like nobody deserves to win this season since the chefs are either mediocre or terrible. That may change as this season goes on.
