Review Fix chats with electronica artist Resin, who discusses her influences and goals for the rest of 2017.
Review Fix: How’d you get involved in music?
Resin: When I was a kid, I got this toy piano and instantly fell in love with the sound. I started dreaming of becoming a professional pianist and so my mom made me take some piano lessons but I just never liked people telling me what or how to play, so I got stuck playing my own little melodies – that’s how I first got into songwriting. I also played some flute and later I started playing guitar but never got past the basics, I am too impatient.
Review Fix: Who influences your sound the most?
Resin: My biggest influence is Kurt Cobain and music that actually inspired him. I studied his influencers for years and so I listened to lots of Pixies, Beatles, Hole, Leadbelly etc. I also grew up surrounded by acoustic guitars, folk music, and that sense of melody and musical progression had a huge impact – it created the base layer for my songwriting and grunge added the darkness. A couple of years ago I finally got into electronic music, especially drum and bass and techno. Listening to producers like Boris Brejcha or Gesaffelstein helped me get technical and paved my way to my current electronic sound.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Resin: I start with exploring sound libraries or ethnic instruments. When I find the sound that speaks to me, I start looking for another sound, harmony, usually in contrast with the first one. Then I look for the melody. I need a lot of complexity to keep me interested throughout the production of the song so I’m always looking for intensity, drama. The contrast of beautiful orchestral harmonies with disharmonized industrial hits –that kind of stuff inspires me.
Review Fix: What makes your new EP/Album/Single special?
Resin: I feel like it has captured the dark sound I gravitate to – I created these dark soundscapes which I blended with folkish lyrics and grungy vocals. I don’t think it puts me into any type of box, like oh she is just a DJ or just a vocalist or whatever. I was able to express myself as all of it – singer, songwriter, composer, producer…
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you before?
Resin: Cinematic, ambient electronica.
Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone buy it?
Resin: Well it’s time female producers and musicians get the credit they deserve. Start seeing us as more than just singers. I was the only person involved in the whole process and the album is still technically well done, it’ dark and bolt.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of the year?
Resin: I want to continue to play live shows and refine my sets. I plan to release a couple singles later this year and the goal is to have a new full-length album out in the spring of 2018. I have to keep making progress, continue to explore new sounds and points of view.
Review Fix: What do you feel you have to do to make your dreams in music come true?
Resin: After working hard for all these years, I’m starting to see progress and it’s so hard to believe that it’s actually happening. All this required a lot of time spent on my own, and now I have to put myself out there, start believing that people enjoy my music, start sharing – that’s an adjustment. I have to make myself more visible online as well as in person.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Resin: My album Fidget comes out August 25. I am already working on new material and I will continue to write material that speaks to me and my current experiences.
