Review Fix chats with Love Commission’s Pat Scarlett who discusses the origin of the band and their goals for the rest of the year.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Pat Scarlett: Well, I picked up the guitar as a kid, and pretty much haven’t looked back since.
Review Fix: Who influences your sound the most?
Scarlett: I’m probably the wrong person to ask – what I can say is that music coming out of the 60s & 70s was the first major influence on me – everything from Hendrix and Led Zeppelin to the Velvet underground. Bands like the Pixies, Jane’s Addiction, some of the noisier acts from the 80s through the 90s have also been staples in my car stereo or whatever.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Scarlett: I guess I don’t have any set structure. Whenever something comes – a melody, hook, lyric motif or whatever – I record it, put it on paper. Often I won’t finalize the lyrics until I’m actually in the studio recording a track. Sometimes I’ll just plug a mic in and sing to the recorded tracks, see what comes out…
Review Fix: What makes your new EP/Album/Single special?
Scarlett: That’s totally a question I leave up to the audience. Right now I’m putting the finishing touches on an album I plan to release later this summer. Really, what it is, I can’t say – but after a year of working on it, taking the material I’ve recorded and assembling it into a finished product, well, what I can say is that it’s a pretty raw and real reflection of a pretty intense ride. It’s been an all-consuming process & I’m looking forward to getting it released & taking it on the road.
Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone buy it?
Scarlett: Someone should buy it if they dig it. That’s the only reason to buy a record. I think it’s cool these days that – whether you’re buying music on iTunes or you’re buying a vinyl copy of an album – there’s always a place you can preview some of the music. You can check out some of the tracks online – then you can download it immediately or get to a record store & pick up a copy. I’m a vinyl fan myself & I think I’ll put out a vinyl copy of the record that I’ll make available via my website & anywhere else that makes sense.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of the year?
Scarlett: Really it’s all about putting this record out & taking this show on tour. I’ll be finalizing all of those details in the coming weeks & posting updates online.
Review Fix: What do you feel you have to do to make your dreams in music come true?
Scarlett: Really, it’s all a question about getting this music in front of people – promote the record, the singles that come out of it, getting on stage and letting that process unfold.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Scarlett: This is what’s next – this process, the record & everything that comes with releasing an album, touring, etc., & I’m digging every minute of it.
