B.P.R.D: The Devil You Know #1 Review: Here Go Again

There’s never any rest for the “B.P.R.D.” Their last event, “Hell on Earth,” almost destroyed the entire planet with a countless number of people dead. Of course, a new evil has to emerge, and this time it’s in “The Devil You Know” by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie with art by Laurence Campbell.

Taking place immediately after “Hell on Earth,” Liz and other members of the “B.P.R.D” search through the ruins of what was Parkinson, North Carolina. Little do they expect that a new threat is about to fall upon them and it is joining forces with an old enemy.

The one thing this first issue does well is that it shows in great detail the carnage that was left over after everything that happened in “Hell on Earth.” You can see the cost of the battle and the way the characters act is written so well that you feel their emotions. Not to mention that there is this huge sense of wanting to know more of what happens that when the comic ends it feels like a punch in the face.

This has to be one of the best looking “B.P.R.D” comics on the market now. Campbell does a fine job of drawing mass carnage with buildings destroyed, cars turned over and decayed corpses. The first image is a raven and it is one excellent looking raven. However, the art does take a dip when it comes to character designs. While Liz and the other main leads look fine, some of the minor characters look, well, like minor characters that belong in the background even though they’re front and center. The monster designs are also less than stellar.

Minor art nitpicks aside, “The Devil You Know” looks to be another great story arc for the “B.P.R.D.” Although this new arc may not be as grand and epic as “Hell on Earth,” it just needs strong storytelling in order to be great.
