With the last few weeks left of Summer, Review Fix gives you five Nintendo Switch games we’ve been obsessed with, but you may have missed. Away from the bright lights of Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart, the Switch has a blossoming third-party and indie scene. Here are five games you simply must check out on Nintendo’s new hybrid console.
Cave Story: You’ve played it before, but never as pretty as this. Although it takes just about 6 hours to complete, it’s a special title that has aged wonderfully.
From Our Review: It’s fair to say that “Cave Story†may even be a superior game than some of the NES titles it clearly draws its inspiration from. The shooting action is fast and frenetic. The enemies aren’t stupid, especially the bosses, who will test your wits and button-mashing skills. The story isn’t too lame. The score sets the scene. This game just does so many things right. Great for a handheld, save points are scattered all over the land. Some of the puzzles are rough, but more often than not, the answer will be right in front of your face.
Kamiko: This game is only five bucks and with three distinctly different playable characters, you’ll get plenty of bang for your buck. With awesome sound and its retro visuals, it’s a game you won’t forget.
Death Squared: Everyone is complaining about Bomberman being too pricey, but Death Squared is half the price and a much better game. With 80 levels and awesome couch co-op action, it’s the best puzzle game on the Switch.
From Our Review: “Death Squared†is an increasingly fun and challenging puzzle game with a simple goal: Using the analogs, successfully move each cube onto its respectively colored platform and continue to the next level. It’s extra cool on the Switch thanks to the Joy Con controllers, as you either comfortably hold each side and play or pass one off to a friend and enjoy some local co-op. Just try not to let your anger get the best of you.
Graceful Explosion Machine: A beautiful retro shooter that will surprise you in terms of gameplay depth, it’s a blast and another great game on the Switch that plays great at home, or on the go.
From Our Review: Overall, getting a game where you can relax and shoot aliens and having a fun time spamming the many options of weapons to clear the level makes for good times. If you’re a fan of side-scrolling shooters such as Contra and also like games like Gradius, it’s like they’re little, cooler, better-looking brother.
Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap: Dare we say, this is the best Non-Nintendo game on the Switch. While it’s awesome on the PlayStation 4, it just feels perfect on the Switch. being able to take a game as special as this on the go makes it even more worth a purchase.
From Our Review: If there was ever a series that didn’t need a remake but desperately needed awareness to its awesomeness, it’s the Wonder Boy series. Reskinned, rereleased and ported to death, you’ve probably played the series as Adventure Island or if you’re not from the States, a plethora of other games. However, that doesn’t mean LizardCube’s homage to the third installment isn’t special. As a matter of fact, it’s beautiful and the best way to play.
