Review Fix chats with Wolfe Sunday’s Laurence Crow who discusses the band’s origin, creative process and goals.
Review Fix: How did Wolfe Sunday get together?
Laurence Crow: Wolfe Sunday really happened as a result of other bands breaking up. I was in a rough tough place in my life, in a really toxic relationship, living in a toxic place. I started writing the first few Wolfe Sunday songs as an escape from that, and I think it shows in the musical content.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Crow: Recently, I’ve been finding I’m most creative after shows. The last few songs I’ve written have been put together in the backseat of my car, at 1am, in the carpark of the venue I had just played. When that spark hits, you’ve just got to write. I’m always scared I’ll forget that one stand out line of lyrics that just went through my head.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Crow: I just put out a video for a track called ‘Damage Control’, which was on the label debut album we recently released. It’s a song that always goes down well at shows, it’s a about one massive party and the aftermath of that. The video was a really fun one to shoot, we filmed at a house party show in Nottingham, where the crowd really did go crazy. The track itself was written when I was going through a phase of only listening to a band called Gogol Bordello. They’re a gypsy punk band and sing a lot about partying hard, and I wanted to write a song that had the same amount of energy and good vibes.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the remainder of 2017?
Crow: I toured pretty hard through the summer, so the last few months have really been a bit of a reflection on that, and writing a few new songs. I’ve been demoing some new stuff which I’ve got some really big plans for. Watch this space!
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Crow: I want people to go away from my shows, or from listening to my record, feeling buzzed. It’s all feel good, positive stuff. I want people to party to what I do.
Review Fix: What’s next for Wolfe Sunday?
Crow: There’s definitely some big plans in the pipe works, some really cool new songs that I’m aching to show people. I’m also touring a few countries I’ve not been to yet, which will be fun! So yeah, as I said, watch this space!
