Review Fix Exclusive: Charmer’s David Daignault Talks New LP, Tour And More

Review Fix chats with Charmer’s David Daignault (vocals/guitar), who discusses the band’s origin, creative process, new LP and upcoming tour.

About Charmer:

According to No Sleep founder Chris Hansen, Charmer is “the definition of Midwestern emo.” Expect all the things you loved about The Promise Ring,  Mineral and Texas is the Reason wrapped up in a nostalgia-inducing 22 minutes of twinkly guitars and heart-felt lyrics.

It’s no secret that emo is an often over-saturated genre which makes it difficult for bands to ever leave their hometown — but Charmer refuses to settle. After just 2 years, the band has already shared the stage with some of emo’s brightest stars including Pinegrove, Teen Suicide, and Dowsing. Charmer’s catchy guitar riffs and unique heart-bearing lyrics have set the band apart from an often overflowing genre. Charmer are hardly redundant, and rather celebrate our ’90s nostalgia in a new and exciting way.

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

David Daignault: Our current drummer Nick asked my old band that didn’t exist anymore to play a show with this brand new band at the time called Hot Mulligan. It was gonna be their first show ever. I had a couple songs laying around and got some musicians in town to learn them and we played the show. None of those members are in the band anymore but once we played that show I was encouraged to keep going and find a solidified line up.

Review Fix: How did I get involved in music?

Daignault: My senior year of high school my closest friend was getting really into music and asked if I was interested in learning how to play the bass so I could play in his band and I had never touched an instrument at that point in my life. That was 6 years ago now and it’s just kind of snowballed from that point.

Review Fix: What’s my creative process like?

Daignault: Idk it varies. For me to write something it usually takes some new chords or new life experience that I feel the need to write about. Anytime I force it I don’t get much gratification from it so I don’t really care to play the songs or bring them to my bandmates.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Daignault: This is a funny question. I usually just say loud and fast. I haven’t really come across a band that I would compare ourselves too.

Review Fix: How did it feel to work with Modern Baseball?

Daignault: It was a super gratifying experience. We went in with a collection of songs and Jake Ewald was super helpful with each step of the process. I learned quite a bit from an engineering perspective that I apply  with the bands I’ve personally recorded since then.

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Daignault: I’d say we are significantly louder and faster live. We use a lot more overdrive than we do on our recordings and usually like to play our songs a little bit different to keep it more exciting for ourselves.

Review Fix: Goals for 2018?

Daignault: Spread our new LP to as many new listeners as we can!

Review Fix: Whats next?

Daignault: We’ll be touring April 13th through the 21st to support our new LP coming out on April 20th and then heavily again during the summer months. We’ll most likely write our next LP this year as well so it’s gonna be a fun year!
