Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Makk Mikkael, who discusses her new single, “How It Feels,†as well as her origin in music and creative process.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Makk Mikkael: Music has always been something I was gonna pursue no matter what. From a young age, I was introduced to it all originally from my mom who performed in a country/rock band. She brought me up on stage and I fell in love with it so much. From there I released my first country album at age 14, picked up the guitar and started going at it. Obviously, country is no longer my genre, but I’ve found my sound now and am continuously creating.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Mikkael: It depends on who I’m with. I usually just flow with what the producer/other writers are into and go off of that. I like to change it up keeps it interesting. Right now we’re starting off with simple beats and writing to them and then we build production after we’ve written the track. I definitely prefer to be in the same room as everyone involved but you do what you gotta do.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Mikkael: I’m mostly inspired by people that have said they would do something and instead they do something else. In other words, people that don’t follow through with their word. I like the shade haha, it fuels my creativity. Experience’s that make me feel something or feel like I have something meaningful to write from it. Honestly, it’s super therapeutic even if the track doesn’t go anywhere just writing down how I feel is good to get out and then it’s released from my thoughts, or I may come back and use some of the words/ideas from it later on which happens a lot.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Mikkael: I would describe my sound as sultry and spacey. My vibe is super mellow, chill R&B. I look up to “The Internet, Majid Jordan, and Banks. So that sorta vibe. Love the sound that’s coming out of Toronto right now.
Review Fix: What was the creative process behind “How It Feels”?
Mikkael: It was an interesting process that was broken up into different parts. I got back from my trip to LA. I was reflecting on everything that had happened while I was there. I was home for about two weeks and then my friend sent me a beat and I just wrote “How It Feels†in 10 minutes and recorded it when I was in Toronto next. We ended up making about 4 different versions of it and then landed on the r&b vibe that is today.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Mikkael: I have yet to perform these tracks live. I feel like when I do it will be super vibey and trippy. In the studio I record with lot’s of effects and echoes to make it atmospheric and chill. I want to bring that all to the stage, with lots of lights and create a mood.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?
Mikkael: To release my debut album, to tour. I am so excited to get in the studio and release this project. I’m working with some super talented individuals so I think everything will turn out super cool and be a complete reflection of where I’m at in my career right now.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Mikkael: My third single will be released with a video. Don’t know the exact date but get ready for it. I just constantly want to create and push boundaries for myself. I think as an artist it’s so powerful that we can do that and push ourselves to do better and see how far we can go.
