Review Fix chats with singer Giulia Millanta, who lets us know about her origin in music and creative process for her new album, “Conversation with a Ghost.â€
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Giulia Millanta: Music just happened to be in my life as a kid. No one in my family is a professional musician but my dad used to play the guitar and my mom the piano. My first instrument was the drums. Then I had to switch to the guitar cause we used to live in an apt. I became an M.D. (doctor of medicine), never practiced…became a full-time musician in 2008 with the release of my first record.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Millanta: Never the same.
Review Fix: What inspires you?
Millanta: The world around me. Things that happen inside and outside of me. Things that resonate with my heart.
Review Fix: What makes “Conversation with a Ghost†a special album?
Millanta: Well “Conversation with a Ghost†is a record about loss. I lost a bunch of friends in the last year and a half and that is part of what prompt me to deal with the concept of loss, in a broader sense.
In this record, every single song is about losing something: love, sanity, your perspective, a friend, your innocence… It’s also about working through the pain that loss can bring and healing
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Millanta: Well… the best way to experience music is experiencing it! Music can’t be told or defined in words. Also, as the artist and the “mother†of these songs is hard to have the distance necessary to put it all in words. Reviewers do that. Here are some adjectives they used to describe my music: powerful, deep, raw, quirky, insightful, intense, feisty, humorous.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Millanta: My records are all recorded live. 2, 3 takes at most. Very few overdubs. That being said: live shows are different because it’s a fuller experience. You get to see the artist, there’s an exchange of energy and they change all the time. I never play the same song twice. It’s always new to me.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?
Millanta: Tour, reach people and make them laugh and cry, give them a good show. Sell tons of records.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Millanta: Another record at some point….there’s always another record in the making.
