Review Fix chats with “Trophy Boy†Emrhys Cooper director who lets us know what it was like to be a part of the Cannes Film Festival and more.
Review Fix: What was it like to be a part of Cannes?
Emrhys Cooper: It was a dream come true. I always had it at the back of my mind when making the short film, and we worked our asses off to complete the just in time for the deadline for submissions for Cannes.
Luckily it all worked out. It was a crazy adventure, nonstop, with many exciting opportunities that I am now exploring.
Review Fix: What did you learn from it?
Cooper: I learned it’s best to be as organized as possible, but also to just allow things to progress naturally and go with the flow. You can tell a mile away when someone is insecure by just trying too hard.
I’ve learned that is about the work. Let the work speak for its self.
Review Fix: How did this film affect you as a creator?
Cooper: It made me appreciate all the many jobs that it takes to get something off the ground. It’s essential to have a great crew, and positive energy on set.
The films subject matter and theme of social media, also has made an impact of my own use of it.
I am on social media way less now, as I’ve got too many other more important things going on…. Luckily.
Review Fix: How did you feel the first time you read Anthony Johnston’s script?
Cooper: Anthony and I worked on ideas before he even started the script, we came up with the story together.
The first draft I read needed some work, as it wasn’t initially what I had wanted. But Anthony is such a fantastic writer and collaborator that he took our notes and made it into a fantastic script.
Review Fix: How do you want people to be affected by this film?
Cooper: I would love them to see that social media is not always what you think it is. I hope they can also see that not being true to yourself can have some severe effects on your self-awareness and happiness.
Review Fix: How would you like it to be remembered?
Cooper: As a stepping stone in my career to bigger things. It’s my directorial debut, and I plan on doing a lot more.
Review Fix: What inspired this film?
Cooper: Seeing the negative effects of social media, and peoples obsession with it.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Cooper: I am turning Trophy Boy into something bigger, not sure exactly which direction yet, but watch the space.
I also have some great films coming out this year to look for.
Review Fix: What else would you like to add?
Cooper: People are going to tell you ‘no’, or dampen your dream. But don’t let just a few knocks push you off the track. No matter how hard it is, it will get easier if you put the work in, and stay focused.
