Review Fix Exclusive: Wild Mercury’s Marie-Pier Lavallée Talks ‘Calling Me’ And More

Review Fix chats with Wild Mercury’s Marie-Pier Lavallée to find out about the band’s origin and what inspired the band’s latest single and more.

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Marie-Pier Lavallée: We all know each other from the same friend. We were all musicians, but playing mainly in the shadow of our own room. Yet, we were spending so much time together and we were feeling so confident when we were between us that we started to jam together without any great expectations. It happened to brighten our weeks and we were clearly exploring an unfulfilled desire in playing rock music.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Marie-Pier Lavallée: Each of us have so many different influences in music and it’s motivating to include a part of everyone of us in the songs. We feel it’s a way to touch more people with the music we create. Usually, someone brings the skeleton of a song, and each member adds flavour to them.

Review Fix: What inspires you?

Marie-Pier Lavallée: The sharing process of creating music with friends that are wonderful people in our lives is a really great source of inspiration. We’ve been inspired by amazing women and men in our lives and every song that we play has a part of our relationship with them in it.

Review Fix: What makes “Calling Me” a special track?

Marie-Pier Lavallée: “Calling Me” tells the constant struggle that comes with the addiction to cigarettes. It can relate to a lot of other things really; this feeling of being trapped in an unhealthy relationship with something or someone. Musically we wanted to express both sides of it, combining heavy and loud instruments to a sexy vocal delivery and witchy harmonies.

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?

Marie-Pier Lavallée: Our sound is flirting with garage rock, blues, soul, country, grunge and folk, always thought in a pop way. We like heavy dynamics that are able to let the songs breathe so there is space for our vocal harmonies to come out of the bunch.

Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?

Marie-Pier Lavallée: Because we’re a trio, we tend to explore different dynamics and guitar melodies during our studio sessions. There is a magic in the process of recording overdubs and layers of sounds. Still, we think that our live shows give a better idea of our passion for what we do and the love we have for one another. We hope that it’s musically translated to the people in the crowd.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2019?

Marie-Pier Lavallée: Our main goals for 2019 is to continuously progress on our instruments, play as many shows as we can with artists that inspire us and enjoy every part of the amazing musical year to come.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Marie-Pier Lavallée: Our third single is coming out this Spring which we are really excited about! We’re planning a little tour just outside of Montreal in the beginning of May. We will be playing Canadian Music Week in Toronto in May and we’ll be playing great gigs this summer as back-up singers for Endrick & The Sandwiches, our close friends’ blues project. Hopefully after all this, we will start the Fall season fully inspired to work on new material.
