Review Fix chats with singer/Songwriter Emma Kelly to find out what inspires her, her goals post-pandemic and more.
Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Emma Kelly: I started out doing musical theatre when I was a child then I trained in it at a full time school from 11 to 16, but I realised by the end I just want to pursue singing/songwriting so I then went and studied at a music school where I met loads of other people with similar dreams, couple of years down the line I’m now releasing music that I’ve written with the friends I’ve met at Uni and working towards my goals.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Emma Kelly: It changes a lot to be honest, If I’m in a session with other writers/producers we’ll usually get a beat together first and then start playing around with the melodies which are then followed by the lyrics. When I write by myself it changes between starting with the melody or lyrics, ever since I was a child I’ve always journaled because I’ve always felt like I’ve got a lot to say and I found it was better to write it down, which in time has turned into lyrics I’ve used.
Review Fix: What Inspires You?
Emma Kelly: I don’t have one specific thing that inspires me the most when it comes to writing, it’s all dependent on the day or if something triggers it. I’d say my surroundings play a big part, I can take something I see in a split second and create a whole story from it, people watching is good because you’re never going to know what’s actually going on but you can create something.
Review Fix: What does music mean to you?
Emma Kelly: Music is everything to me, it’s my escape. I can zone out and just listen for hours whilst taking away any feeling for anything else. I’ve got different playlists for certain moods, and I find it just the perfect connection you can have with someone. Music is one of those things I couldn’t live without.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Emma Kelly: British pop with emphasis on the British as I’m always told how much I sound like I’m from here. I mean they’re not wrong though.
Review Fix: How are your live shows different from your studio work?
Emma Kelly: I am 100 times more nervous that’s a given. I love both equally but I feel I’m more relaxed when I’m in the studio, If I mess up I’m just like ok let’s do another take but If I mess up a performance it’s live people won’t have missed it and that plays in my head. Sound wise I like to keep things similar to the studio version as possible apart from when I want to add in those extra flares. I’ve got a super talented band behind me and we all work so well together to give the best live show we possibly can.
Review Fix: What \inspired your latest single?
Emma Kelly: I was actually sat on the tube on my way to a session and I was just people watching as usual and literally everyone was on their phone and I thought to myself if something happened right now I could guarantee no one would look up from their screens, I said this to the guys I was in the session with and we started talking about the addiction people have with their phones, technology, social media etc and the song was born from there. It’s kind of saying everyone has their own vices and we’re all a little drunk on them .
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of 2020?
Emma Kelly: Definitely leave my house! Release more music. Once all this pandemic is over I can’t wait to get back in to face to face sessions rather than zoom. I want to be playing live again so fingers crossed I’ll still be able to do that before this year ends.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Emma Kelly: More music! I’m not going to say when but there’s definitely more coming this year.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Emma Kelly: Don’t forget to stream Drunk when it gets released on the 5th of June.
