Review Fix chats with The Educators’ Liam Naughton, who discusses their introduction to music and their new single, “Life In Technicolour.â€
Review Fix: How did the project start?
Liam Naughton: In with The Animal Farm. George Addison Atkinson who was playing drums with Cameron in Georgia Reeds line up came on board. Matt Leppanen of The Animal Farm played bass and produced what was to become my Cut On A Cut EP. I battled it a bit but we got there in the end. Unfortunately covid-19 hit the shelves before I did, the music scene died in London, is still dead and it’s looking like that for the rest of 2020 so I grabbed my parachute, bailed, and now I’m at home in Perth eating a cheese burger.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Naughton: Sit down with my sometimes friend / sometimes enemy Mr Acoustic Guitar. Wrestle with him, grab him by the throat and force him to the ground until he gives me something that I like, something fresh and interesting. Then I play him over and over and over and over until he makes perfect sense and drags a lyric out of me that I can develop into something that makes him and me good friends again…..until the next time we sit down again (and have a chat)
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Naughton: I like them all, they all mean something to me and they all get the same level of attention. Depends on the day you ask me, but seeing as you asked me today, today my favourite is Life In Technicolour. How was it written…refer previous answer ïŠ It’s how life was described to me when they off their mentally stabilising Lithium medication. On Lithium (Li on the period table of elements) the world looks grey but when they go off if Life looks like a technicolour movie
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2020?
Naughton: Well. Cut On A Cut has just been released so the goal is to flog that to the market, and keep flogging it until I’m blue in the face. I’ll flog it up and down the street, I’ll flog it first thing in the morning, all day and all evening. Flog fucking flog flog flog. I was supposed in London for the year and had all these shows lined up in UK and Ireland but Covid-19 flogged me before I could get my whip out. Now I’m back in Perth, Australia waiting for the borders to open so I can get on another tour and, that’s right, flog it all over Australia.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Naughton: I want it to put them under a spell like the pied piper that makes them part with their hard earned cash :-) Mmmmh well It would be nice if it was liked. I’ve never written a song because that’s what I think people want to hear, I write what I like, what feels right for me and hope people can connect with that
Review Fix: What’s next?
Naughton: More flogging hahaha seeing as we’ve been doing a bit of cutting lately, I want to cut some quality demos with the new home studio that I’ve bought and develop the next release. All the music and writing is done so develop the arrangements with The Educators.
