Review Fix chats with amazing pro wrestling cake baker Marj Santaromana who lets us know all about her process and more.
Review Fix: How did you get into baking like this?
Marj Santaromana:Â I’d dabbled in art my entire life, but I never really had an interest in making a career out of it until I started watching cake decorating reality shows on TV. I started baking cakes at home for fun before deciding to go to the French Culinary Institute to pursue a degree in pastry.
Review Fix: What are some of your favorite creations?
Santaromana:Â Generally my favorite creations are any cakes meant to look realistic, namely food and life-size pets! But my all-time favorite cake I’ve made has to be the one I created for the WWE Raw 25th Anniversary. I used to be the head cake decorator at a bakery in Brooklyn that often worked with the Barclays Center. When Raw 25 was in town, they wanted a cake to commemorate the occasion, and I just so happened to be the perfect person for the job.
Review Fix: How does wrestling become a part of this?
Santaromana:Â While I love what I do, the cake decorating community has become a little over-saturated. I decided to put my own spin on my art by combining it with my other love, pro-wrestling. My baked goods gained more attention when I started making gingerbread cookies dressed as various wrestlers. I’ve even gotten orders from wrestlers themselves. When the “Everything Is Cake” meme gained traction, I didn’t jump on board immediately because I felt everything that could be done had already been done. Then it hit me that nobody had tackled wrestling cakes yet, so it had to be me. The combination of cake and wrestling is a pretty niche market, so I feel like I can truly make it my own.
Review Fix: Favorite wrestler? Why?
Santaromana:Â Chris Jericho. He’s the reason I fell in love with wrestling as a kid, and some twenty years later he’s still managed to remain LE CHAMPION. He truly knows how to evolve and adapt to his ever-changing surroundings. Everything he touches turns into gold. (Let’s not talk about some of the poor off-screen choices and remarks he’s made though.)
Review Fix: What are your goals?
Santaromana:Â You know how celebrities have personal chefs? Like that, but a personal cake decorator for wrestlers?
Review Fix: What’s next?
Santaromana:Â I may or may not be working on a TV show all of September! Can’t say too much about it right now, but you will hear about it in the future!
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
Santaromana: I make all sorts of wrestling art and merch, not just cakes! I try to incorporate it into every aspect of my life. You can check out my work at marjdotjpg.com and follow me on Instagram @marj.jpg
